Esophagus
The esophagus is a flexible tube that connects the mouth with the rest of the
digestive tract.
Include an enlarged area called the CROP as a temporary storage and
moistening of the food, as a place for salivary amylase to work, and as microbial
fermentation in some species.
Crop
The crop is an out-pocketing of the esophagus and is located just outside the
body cavity in the neck region.
Swallowed feed and water are stored in the crop until they are passed to the rest
of the digestive tract.
When the crop is empty or nearly empty, it sends hunger signals to the brain so
that the chicken will eat more.
Proventriculus
Corresponds to the true stomach
The site of HCl and pepsin production in birds
Gizzard / Ventriculus
A muscular area which contains grit
The involuntary muscular contraction aid in the mechanical breakdown of food
Large Intestine
Has 3 sections
Cecum – the first section – relatively large in horse and rabbit; when well
developed as in the horse, contains many bacteria which produce enzymes
that digest fiber;
Colon - involved in reabsorption of water; length is related to the amount of
water reabsorption;
Rectum – last section leading to the anal section.
