How should preparation strategies differ for JEE Main and JEE Advanced - The dates of JEE
Advanced 2022 have been announced. JEE Main 2022 exam has been concluded. JEE Advanced 2022
will be conducted on August 28. Candidates can check here how to strategize the preparations in last
few days before the JEE Advanced 2022 exam.

Now JEE Main and JEE Advanced is conducted with just a short period of time in between, the
question arises how should the student’s preparation strategies differ for JEE Main and JEE
Advanced? Careers360 conducted a live session with Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella (All India IIT
Coordinator And Senior Maths Lecturer, Sri Chaitanya Educational Institutions) who answered all of
the queries regarding how the preparation strategies differ for JEE Main and JEE Advanced. General
preparation tips for both exams were also discussed for the students’ reference. Read the full article

also check the live session with Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella below.

General Preparation Strategies for JEE Main and JEE Advanced

While both examinations are quite different from each other, some of the preparation strategies for
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are similar in nature as per Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella. Candidates can
check the various preparation strategies given below to boost their study and score well in the
entrance examination:

• Time Management - First of all, the students are required to learn how to manage their time.
According to Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella, since the examination is time limited, the students
should know how to use their time wisely so that the exam can be finished at a comfortable pace.
Students should practice how to manage the order of answering the questions in the examination
to do well in the real examination.

• Match your caliber - While creating a study schedule, the students should prepare it as per their
caliber. For example, Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella emphasizes that students who have chances of
scoring high and have prepared well should focus more on attempting mock tests and previous
questions during the last few months before the examination. Meanwhile the other students
should brush up their concepts first and then focus on mock tests.

• Refer to NCERT - ‘Students should confirm the boundaries of NCERT’ - Prof. Uma Sankar
Manchella. For Physics and Chemistry, most of the questions in the entrance examination will be
from NCERT and CBSE books. Therefore students should focus on NCERT and try to understand
the nature and depth of the concepts.

• Practice Mathematics Questions - However, for Mathematics, NCERT will not be sufficient. The
students are required to practice problems from other books too to score well in the examination.

• Don’t Neglect Practical Manuals - Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella emphasizes that he feels students
neglect practical manuals of Physics and Chemistry a lot which leads to them losing marks in the
examination. Questions from these manuals are often present in the examination paper and the
students are advised not to skip them.

• Solve Previous Question Papers - Students should solve at least previous 15 year questions to
prepare for the examination. This will allow the students to understand the pattern in how the
paper is to be attempted. All of the questions should be properly read and solved till the end.
‘Don’t jump to another question before finishing the previous one. This will make the students lose
two questions’ - Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella.

• Self Motivation - At the end of the day, the students motivation and zeal is the biggest factor
which will influence the direction of their preparation.

Extra Preparation Strategies for JEE Main

• Along with focusing on previous JEE Main papers, the students should also refer to previous JEE
Advanced question papers especially objective and numerical value type questions. There are high
chances of these questions being repeated for JEE Main.

• For Mathematics, the students should focus on core areas such as Quadratics, Binomial, Sets &
Relations, Mathematical Reasoning and Statistics. These topics are very elementary and will fetch
good marks. Calculus can also be studied by the students to score well in JEE Main.

• In terms of Chemistry, Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella believes that most of the questions will be
directly from NCERT. Topics such as Biomolecules and Biochemistry need to be studied well by the
students.

• Focus of the students should be on getting enough scores to qualify for NITs admission or being
qualified for JEE Advanced.
Extra Preparation Strategies for JEE Advanced

• According to Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella, since IIT Bombay will be preparing the JEE Advanced
2022 question papers, the students should refer to the papers of 2007 and 2015 since the same
authorities had prepared those also. This will allow the students to know the mindset of how the
papers can be prepared by the authorities.

• Students should have more exposure to numerical value type questions more than one answer
type questions.

• In Mathematics, the students should put more focus on Algebra and Calculus. As per the previous
year papers, there is more weightage on these topics.

• Physics topics such as Mechanics and Electricity have good weightage.

• For Chemistry, equal weightage is given for all sections - Organic (33%), Inorganic (33%) and
Physical Chemistry (33%). However, the authorities will make the Physical Chemistry questions
difficult to keep the standards of the examination high.

• Students should also prepare questions from each topic which have not been asked in the
previous papers.

• During the preparation period, the students should give priority to the important areas, change
their orientation and focus on those particular models.

For the last-minute preparation of both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, Prof. Uma Sankar Manchella also
advises students to concentrate on formulas, prepare the core flashcards from each subject and
place it in front of the desk and go through it. Students are advised not to refer to anything new,
drink water and not to solve any unnecessary problems from any new areas.
