PEC 1A
ASSIGNMENT
PED 111
A. Write an essay on the following:
1. How do you differentiate assessment from testing, measurement and evaluation?
Assessment is the process of gathering information to monitor progress and make
educational decisions if necessary. Also, an assessment may include a test, but also
includes methods such as observations, interviews, behavior monitoring, etc. Testing is a
method to determine a students’ ability to complete certain tasks or demonstrate mastery
of a skill or knowledge of content. Measurement refers to the set of procedures and the
principles for how to use the procedures in educational tests and assessments. Evaluation
are the procedures used to determine whether the subject meets a preset criterion, such as
qualifying for special education services.
2. Discuss what is meant by:
Assessment of Learning is a way to see what the students can do. Assessment as
Learning occurs when students reflect on and monitor their progress to inform their future
learning goals which is the formative assessment while assessments as learning occurs
when teachers use evidence of student learning to make judgements on student
achievement against goals and standards which is the summative assessment. Assessment
for Learning is a way to see what the teachers should do in response.
B. Choose a topic/lesson of a certain subject. Give your example of each:
Topic: Basic Properties of sets
Any group or collection of objects is called a set. The objects that belong in a set are the
elements, or members, of the set.
Example: The set consisting of the four seasons has spring, summer, fall, and winter as its
elements.
The following two methods are often used to designate a set.
▪ Describe the set using words.
▪ List the elements of the set inside a pair of braces, {}. This method is called the roster
method. Commas are used to separate the elements.
For instance, let’s use S to represent the set consisting of the four seasons. Using the roster method,
we would write
𝑆 = {𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟, 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙, 𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟}
The order in which the elements of a set are listed is not important. Thus, the set consisting of the
four seasons can also be written as
𝑆 = {𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟, 𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙, 𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑚𝑒𝑟}
The following table gives two examples of sets, where each set is designated by a word description
and also by using the roster method.

Example: Use the roster method to represent the set of the days in a week.
Solution: {𝑆𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝑇𝑢𝑒𝑠𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝑊𝑒𝑑𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝑇ℎ𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝐹𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝑆𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑑𝑎𝑦}
Example: Write a word description for the set
𝐴 = {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑑, 𝑒, 𝑓, 𝑔, ℎ, 𝑖, 𝑗, 𝑘, 𝑙, 𝑚, 𝑛, 𝑜, 𝑝, 𝑞, 𝑟, 𝑠, 𝑡, 𝑢, 𝑣, 𝑤, 𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧}
Solution: Set A is the set of letters of the English alphabet.
1. Essay:
1. What is a set?
2. How to use the roster method?
3. When to use the roster method?
2. Objective type of Test (3 of each)

2. List the elements of the set inside a pair of braces, [].
3. The objects that belong in a set are the elements, or members, of the set.
b. Sentence completion
1. List the elements of the set inside a pair of braces, _____.
2. This method is called the _____ method.
3. ______ are used to separate the elements.
c. Alternate Response Type of Test (modified TRUE or FALSE)
1. List the elements of the set inside a pair of square brackets.
2. This method is called the roster method.
3. Asterisk are used to separate the elements.
