ORIGINAL TITLE: The Thankful Poor ARTIST: Henry Ossawa Tanner YEAR OF COMPLETION: 1984 REVISED TITLE: The Thankful Learner APPROPRIATION ARTIST: Ma. Cristine M. Lazo APPROPRIATION COMPLETION: November 16, 2021 DESCRIPTION: Tanner’s “The Thankful Poor” painting reminded me of a quote from Sterling K. Brown which is – “always have an attitude of gratitude”. So, I decided to make an appropriation of the painting by relating it to the current situation of students entitled “The Thankful Learner”. In the appropriation I made, I dubbed as the kid, prepared school materials and equipment instead of food, and depicted the old man as my laptop. The elements incorporated to both artworks were different, however, it expresses the same message. No matter how hard it gets, no matter how challenging our life become, we must always feel gratitude as we always have something to take to ease our hunger – either that be hunger for food or for knowledge. Furthermore, I believe that as humans, we are all capable of coping with situations no matter how hard it gets. Henceforth, the new normal makes us feel poor in different aspects, but we must realize that ungratefulness will not help us earn the benefits of the current challenges.
