As a student dealing with the new learning scheme, what are your ways to
manage your stress?
For a student like me, stress is something inevitable. It is both a factor (because stress
can lead to other mental health issues), and has a factor (in a sense that the things we
cannot hold into our grasp at times becomes stressors). Lately, I’ve been able to manage
the stress coming forth and back by:
• Getting enough sleep, or whenever I feel like I really need to;
• Playing Call of Duty Mobile (only sometimes);
• Practicing and memorizing BlackPink dance choreographies;
• Reviewing my footwork about the basics of Latin dance;
• Listening to the compilations of Beethoven’s classical compositions in Spotify;
• Meditation as I listen and follow Spotify podcasts;
• Taking a ME time (treating myself some food); and
• Watching crime documentaries, memorizing legal articles, and familiarizing legal
terms.
These ways greatly help me overcome my stress, or somehow view stress as a positive
thing which engaged me to the process of growing beyond my limits as a person.
2. How does dancing reduces stress?
Base from Science, when humans feel physically good, the mind feels good too.
According to Stanila (2016), when the human body engages in physical activities,
neurotransmitters and endorphins are being released. Endorphins help alleviate stress
because it is the human body’s natural painkillers which help the mind to improve.
Relatively, when we dance all our physical assets, muscles, tissues, and tendons are
moving which means that endorphins are being released. Not only that, personally, I think
that the music while dancing also allows the human mind to be calm or relieved.
Moreover, dancing reduces stress through a creative outlet – may it be music, a place to
dance and socialize, and/or the moves and costumes when dancing. Dancing helps
people to reconnect with their true self. Notably, dancing is simply an enjoyable exercise.
When something is enjoyable, then this means “stress free” or soothing to the feeling of
a person. According to Reasons Why Dancing Can Help Relieve Stress (n.d.), dancing
reduces stress because movement soothes muscle pains and stiff joins which may be
caused by sitting for a long period of time, etc. It also improves the mood of a person,
enhance mental focus because dancing requires body and mind coordination.
3. How do mind and body connect to each other?
Basically, our body and mind are part of the circulatory system which is why they connect
to each other in various ways and terms. However, it is explained that mind and body
connect to each other in the sense that our emotions, thoughts, or beliefs can positively
or negatively affect the healthiness of our body. While whatever we eat and do to our
physical body can positively or negatively impact the mind. This means that our mind and
body have complex relationships as both affects both. According to Dr. James Gordon,
known as the founder of Center for Mind-Body Medicine, “The brain and peripheral
nervous system, the endocrine and immune systems, and indeed, all the organs of our
body and all the emotional responses we have, share a common chemical language and
are constantly communicating with one another”, (What Is the Mind-Body Connection?,
n.d.). Thus, the mind and body being part of one circulatory system functions together in
a way that may either be beneficial or dangerous for both (mind and body).
