Discuss these questions. 2) What are the different roles in your family? 'b)_ What are the roles of the grandparents in a family? Read about roles in the family in the 19th century and in pairs discuss how the roles of men, women and children have changed over the last 100 years. Ina 19th century family the father was the breadwinner, the head of the family. He was responsible for earning ‘money forthe family. As he was working all day, he took litle parti the family’s dally tives. His wife and children respected and obeyed him. The role of the wife was as important as that of the husband. She was in charge ‘of the whole family. She was running the household, she had to bring up the children and make sure there was always food on the table. She did everything to keep the family together. Doing the housework was ‘much more dificult than nowadays as there were no household devices to make life easier. In some countries, all of a woman's property, even the money she earned, belonged to her husband. Divorce was legal but it was very rare and unimaginable in the 19th century. Children of lower class families had to work. Some children worked in factories; they often worked for more than 12 hours at the age of 13. Children’s work was largely seasonal, o they did have some time to play. How do you think family roles will change over the next decades? d) Ate there any particular changes that you would like to see in men’s and women’s roles? wea You are going to read an article about family roles. Anew national survey has found that after nearly a generation Of see Tosa. ost men and women agree that increased gender equity is {good for both sexes. They also believe that the strains ofthis relatively new world have made building successful marriages, raising children and leading satisfying lives ever more dificult. _— 0 Latge majorities of more than 4,000 . placed high importance on having a successful mariage and family. At the same time, equally large majorities of working men and women said they felt bad about leaving their children in the care of ‘others, and wished they could spend more time on their families and themselves. Surprisingly, although men and women agreed they should hhave equal work opportunities, and men said they approved of women working outside the home, large majortes ofboth said it would be better if women could instead stay home and just take care ofthe house and children. Most men inthe polls said they were happy to share childcare and domestic chores with wives who work outside the home. Yet fiotsehold| lites remain sharply divided along gender lines, Working mothers sil do twice as much housework as their husbands, and .....3..... expressed at least some dissatisfaction with the amount of help their husbands give around the house. Jobs Change, Chores don’t In just the past three decades, most Americans agree that changing gender roles have dramatically sou. uuu at work and at home. Between 1970 and 1995, the percentage Pt Roles in the family ™ 3 of women who worked outside the home climbed from 50 percent to 76 percent. The percentage of lawyers and Judges who are women doubled. Today, nearly a third of all professional athletes are women. Women currently make up nearly half of all mid-level managers in American corporations, but fewer than 3 percent of all chief executive officers are women. ‘Athome, men do more around the house than their fathers ever did, But the burden still falls on women: on average, working ‘mothers do about 20 hours of housework a week, down from 30 hours two decades ago, while their husbands are doing 10 hours a week, up from § hours. In the survey, 7 in 10 said there's too much pressure on both men and women today to realize the American ideal: marriage, family and a successful career.
