Newtonian kinetics

Problem 1: A block S (the sliding block) with mass M= 3.3 kg.


The block is free to move along a horizontal frictionless surface
and connected, by a cord that wraps over a frictionless pulley, to
a second block H (the hanging block), with a mass of m=2.1 kg.
The cord and pulley are massless. The hanging block H fall as the
sliding block S accelerates to the right. Find the acceleration of
block S and block H and the tension of the cord.
Problem 2: While two forces act on it, a particle is to move at the constant velocity v=3i-4j. One
of the force is F1=2i-6j.What is the other force?
Problem 3: A block is projected up a frictionless inclined plane with initial speed Vo =3.50 m/s.
The angle of incline is 32.0*. (a) How far up the plane does the block go? (b) How long does it
take to get there?
Problem 4: T3 = 65.0 N. If m1 = 12.0 kg, m2 = 24.0 kg, and m3 = 31.0 kg, calculate (a) the
magnitude of the system’s acceleration, (b) the tension T1, and (c) the tension T2.

Problem 5: A block of mass m1 = 3.70 kg on a frictionless plane inclined at


angle 30.0* is connected by a cord over a massless, frictionless pulley to a
second block of mass m2=2.30 kg. What are (a) the magnitude of the
acceleration of each block, (b) the direction of the acceleration of the hanging
block, and (c) the tension in the cord?
Problem 6: A certain force gives an object of mass m1 an acceleration of 12.0 m/s2 and an
object of mass m2 an acceleration of 3.30 m/s2. What acceleration would the force give to an
object of mass (a) m2 - m1 and (b) m2 + m1?
Problem 7: A 52 kg circus performer is to slide down a rope that will break if the tension
exceeds 425 N. At what magnitude of acceleration does the performer just avoid breaking the
rope?
Problem 8: An object is hung from a spring balance attached to the ceiling of an elevator cab.
The balance reads 65 N when the cab is standing still. What is the reading when the cab is
moving upward (a) with a constant speed of 7.6 m/s and (b) with a speed of 7.6 m/s while
decelerating at a rate of 2.4 m/s2?
Friction
Problem 9: The floor of a railroad flatcar is loaded with loose crates having a coefficient of
static friction of 0.25 with the floor. If the train is initially moving at a speed of 48 km/h, in how
short a distance can the train be stopped at constant acceleration without causing the crates to
slide over the floor? (Find the maximum deceleration to stop safely)
Problem 10: A slide-loving pig slides down a certain 353 slide in twice the time it would take to
slide down a frictionless 353 slide. What is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the pig and
the slide?
Problem 11: A baseball player with mass m =79 kg, sliding into second base, is retarded by a
frictional force of magnitude 470 N. What is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the player
and the ground?
*hard Problem 12: A 1000 kg boat is traveling at 90 km/h when its engine is shut off. The
magnitude of the frictional force between boat and water is proportional to the speed v of the
boat: fk= 70v, where v is in m/s and fk is in N. Find the time required for the boat to slow to 45
km/h.
Collisions
Problem 13: A bullet of mass 10 g strikes a ballistic pendulum of mass 2.0 kg. The center of
mass of the pendulum rises a vertical distance of 12 cm. Assuming that the bullet remains
embedded in the pendulum, calculate the bullet’s initial speed.
Problem 14:A completely inelastic collision occurs between two balls that move directly toward
each other along a vertical axis. Just before the collision, one ball, of mass 3.0 kg, is moving
upward at 20 m/s and the other ball, of mass 2.0 kg, is moving downward at 12 m/s. How high
do the combined two balls of putty rise above the collision point?
Problem 15: Block 2 (mass 1.0 kg) is at rest on a frictionless surface and
touching the end of spring of spring constant 200 N/m. Block 1 (mass 2.0 kg)
traveling at speed v1=4.0 m/s, collides with block 2, and the two blocks stick
together. When the blocks momentarily stop, by what distance is the spring compressed?
Problem 16: A steel ball of mass 0.500 kg is fastened to a cord that is 70.0 cm long
and fixed at the far end. The ball is then released when the cord is horizontal. At
the bottom of its path, the ball strikes a 2.50 kg steel block initially at rest on a
frictionless surface. The collision is elastic. Find (a) the speed of the ball and
(b) the speed of the block, both just after the collision

Problem 17: A body of mass 2.0 kg makes an elastic collision with another body at rest and
continues to move in the original direction but with one-fourth of its original speed. What is the
mass of the other body?
Problem 18: Ball B, moving in the positive direction of an x axis at speed v, collides with
stationary ball A at the origin. A and B have different masses. After the collision, B moves in the
negative direction of the y axis at speed v/2. In what direction does A move?
Angular movement problem

Problem 9: (page 307) Disk’s mass M=2.5 kg, radius 20 cm. block’s
mass m=1.2 kg. Block hangs from a massless cord. Find the acceleration
of the falling block, and angular acceleration of the disk, the tension of
the cord.
Problem 10: A diver makes 2.5 revolutions on the way from a 10-m-high platform to the water.
Assuming zero initial vertical velocity, find the average angular velocity during the dive.
Problem 11: The angular acceleration of a wheel is a = 6 t^4 +4 t^2. At time t=0, the wheel has
an angular velocity of +2.0 rad/s and an angular position of +1.0 rad. Write expressions for
(a) the angular velocity (rad/s) and (b) the angular position (rad) as functions of time (s).
Problem 12: A drum rotates around its central axis at an angular velocity of 12.60 rad/s. If the
drum then slows at a constant rate of 4.20 rad/s^2, (a) how much time does it take and
(b) through what angle does it rotate in coming to rest?
Problem 13: The angular speed of an automobile engine is increased at a constant rate from
1200 rev/min to 3000 rev/min in 12 s. (a) What is its angular acceleration in revolutions per
minute-squared? (b) How many revolutions does the engine make during this 12 s interval?
Problem 14: A flywheel turns through 40 rev as it slows from an angular speed of 1.5 rad/s to a
stop. (a) Assuming a constant angular acceleration, find the time for it to come to rest. (b) What
is its angular acceleration? (c) How much time is required for it to complete the first 20 of the 40
revolutions?

Problem 19: Calculate the rotational inertia of a meter stick, with mass 0.56 kg, about an axis
perpendicular to the stick and located at the 20 cm mark. (Treat the stick as a thin rod.)
Problem 20: A small ball of mass 0.75 kg is attached to one end of a 1.25-m-long massless rod,
and the other end of the rod is hung from a pivot. When the resulting pendulum is 30degree from
the vertical, what is the magnitude of the gravitational torque calculated about the pivot?
Problem 21: Each particles has mass m, fixed to the ends of a rigid massless
rod of length L1+L2, with L1=20 cm and L2=80 cm. The rod is held
horizontally on the fulcrum and then released. What are the initial
accelerations of both particles.
Problem 22: A meter stick is held vertically with one end on the floor and is then allowed to fall.
Find the speed of the other end just before it hits the floor, assuming that the end on the floor
does not slip.
Problem 23: A tall, cylindrical chimney falls over when its base is ruptured. Treat the chimney
as a thin rod of length 55.0 m. At the instant it makes an angle of 35.0 degree with the vertical as
it falls, what are (a) the radial acceleration of the top, and (b) the tangential acceleration of the
top. (Hint: Use energy considerations, not a torque.) (c) At what angle u is the tangential
acceleration equal to g?
Problem 24: A record turntable rotating at 33.5 rev/min slows down and stops in 30s after the
motor is turned off. A) Find its angular acceleration in revolutions per minute-squared. B) how
many revolutions does it make in this time?
