CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter will focus on the research design, locale, respondents, instruments,
ethical standards, data gathering procedure and statistical treatment.

Research Design

This study will use quantitative method. It uses experimentation and observation
as the research instrument because observation and experimentation will be design to
gather more and enough information that will fit to the aim of the study.

Container 1:

10ml of water

250g of mayana leaves

On 250 grams of Mayana leaves, a cup of water with a quantity of 10 ml will be

added to get the extract of the leaves for the experimentation in creating a substitute ink
marker.

Container 2:

5ml of water

500g of alugbati seeds

Container 3:

15ml of water

500g of alugbati seeds

and 250g of mayana
leaves

Research Locale

The study will be conducted at Saint Michael College of Caraga, a private school
managed partly urban private school and a Catholic school. This school comprises and
offers five tracks which Academic and Technical Vocational Tracks. Under Academic
Tracks are Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMSS), Accounting, Business & Management (ABM), General
Academic Strand (GAS), and Maritime. It is located in Atupan St., Nasipit 8602, Rizal
St, Nasipit, Agusan Del Norte.

Nasipit is a coastal municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte. Can be trace
back to as early as 1880s when it was declared as a pueblo by the Spanish colonizers.
According to townsfolk, its name may have been derived from an incident where an
immigrant asked a native, immediately after bitten by a crab. Nasipit has 19 barangays.

The alugbati seeds are from the small town of Agong-Ong, Buenavista Agusan
del Norte some of it are from Culit, Nasipit Agusan del Norte. While the mayana leaves
are from District 1 of Punta, Nasipit, Agusan del Norte.

The researchers will be focusing in the said school specifically the grade 12
Senior High School, Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS).

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study is limited to the Grade 12 HUMSS student of Saint
Michael College of Caraga School. The researcher uses the chance sampling method in
identifying the respondent. The researchers choose Grade 12 HUMSS random students
out of its 81 total population for school year 2019-2020.

Research Instrument

In this study, few materials will be used for making ink marker. Alugbati seed and
Mayana leaves are the plants that are important in producing new ink marker by the use
of plants extract. Some materials added to make ink markers to be the same quality as the
commercial ink marker. Vinegar can enhance the color of the ink. Iodine use to darken
the liquid for ink marker while the salt used to keep the ink marker.

The instrument that will be used by the researchers in this study is to make an
experiment among the two plants mayana (Coleus blumei) and alugbati (Basella alba) in
producing natural ink markers. Alugbati (Basella alba) seeds and mayana (Coleus
blumei) leaves would be the materials that will be use to produce substitute ink, it is to
test its effectiveness.

In this experiment, the researcher will be using 250g of alugbati (Basella alba)
and 250g mayana (Coleus blumei). The researcher will be adding some materials to make
the ink more effective, they will use: 1-teaspoon of vinegar, 3 teaspoon of iodine, 1-
teaspoon ethyl alcohol and pinch of iodized salt.

Ethical Standards

In conducting this study, the researcher explained what is this purpose all about.
Researchers will know the limitations of the usage of the area where the research will be
conducted. To this, the researchers conduct to the respondent to ensure their willingness,
the researcher creates a consent to be agreed to the respondent, it is also a way to protect
the respondents to any kind of danger. There will be no other organisms harmed and will
be protected at all means when conducting this research. The researchers follow an
ethical standard in making the study.
Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will be conducting and experiment to analyze and test the
effectiveness of mayana (Coleus blumei) leaves and alugbati (Basella alba) seeds in
producing an ink that would be sufficient to level with the available commercial ink in
the market.

The outcome of this experiment will be able to help the researchers in establishing
a solid, organic substitute for commercial ink.

1. Collection of dye

a. Extraction of ink out of 500g of alugbati (Basella alba) seeds will be the way of
simmering it with a 5ml of water. After extraction strain the extracted ink to separate the
skin and seed of berries and put it on a clean container.

b. Extraction of ink out of 250g of mayana (Coleus blumei) leaves will be the use of
blender with a 10ml of water. After extraction strain the extracted ink to separate the
leaves and put it on a clean container.

2. Preparation of ink

a. Extract the juice of Alugbati berries with the use of mortar and pestle.

b. Strain the extracted juice.

c. After straining, put the ink in a clean beaker.

d. Transfer the extracted juice from the beaker into the cartridge and put the cartridge
into the printer.

e. Now its ready to print.

3. Data gathering tools

a. Intensity. The degree of colored produce.

b. Stability of color. The ability of steadiness of color.

c. Consistency of color. The condition of color of the ink to stay constant.

d. Resistant to fading. The ability of the ink to stay constant in terms of color.

e. Absorption time. The amount of time required to dry or to be absorb in paper.

4. Evaluation of samples

Collected extracts after through analysis of the content will be injected to a printer
cartridge and test its effect to several types of paper used in printing. Evaluation shall be
made to the different samples.
