Definition
Blended learning (also known as hybrid learning) is a method of teaching that integrates
technology and digital media with traditional instructor-led classroom activities, giving students
more flexibility to customize their learning experiences.
“Blended learning is the interdependent combination of face-to-face and online education. It
involves combining the best of these two modes of learning in such a way that they complement
and supplement each other. Effective blended learning occurs when online and face-to-face
modalities are used to their full advantage for optimal interaction and when there is capacity for
student-paced and student-directed learning.” Bond University
A blended approach to learning is about the design of a course that enhances the teaching and
learning experiences for students and teachers by combining face-to-face learning activities with
online learning components.

Advances in technology provide new opportunities for students to learn in diverse environments
and for courses to be designed and delivered in a way that enhances the teachers’ role.

1970’s to 1980’s: TV-Based Technology to Support Live Training

One of the most successful satellite-based training case studies is the Stanford University
Interactive TV network. Stanford devoted resources to their video network in the 70’s and 80’s
so that professors could hold classes in multiple locations throughout SF at once, and it is still
running to this day. Instead of having to send assignments to the professor by mail or courier,
learners can now submit their work for review online.

2000 Until Today: Blended Learning Integration

Companies have the opportunity to train their employees anywhere at any time, while online
learners can participate in online communities and interactive eLearning courses from anywhere
in the world. Gradually, the union between face-to-face instruction and technology-based
learning is producing new and creative ways to enrich the educational experience and make
learning fun, exciting, and even more beneficial.

Blended learning has a proven track record of bringing traditional classrooms into the tech-
friendly 21st century. Now that you know the history of blended learning, why not use it to
transform your curriculum into an interactive and engaging learning experience.

Conclusion
It is through exploring, brainstorming and exchanging best practices that we can effectively
bring these opportunities into the everyday life of pupils and teachers. With the digital education
action plan, we can provide new digital comprehensive approach. This is in order to address the
two main needs, first, the need to improve and extend the use of digital technologies to improve
teaching and learning practices and blended learning is an example of how we can do these.
And second, we need to equip all learners with the digital knowledge skill and attitudes to life, to
work learn and drive in a world increasingly mediated by digital technologies and addressing
those 2 aspects of digital education requires policies and actions.
