4 - Important Preliminary Information

Before any installation, we strongly recommend that you back up your Sciforma database.
We do not give any warranty concerning backward compatibility between Sciforma releases.
Therefore if for any reason you decide to revert back to an older version after having installed

We recommend that you avoid using Sciforma in a production environment until you have

7 - Installation

7.1 - Reminder
Before any installation, we strongly recommend that you back up your Sciforma database.

We do not give any warranty concerning backward compatibility between Sciforma releases.
Therefore, if for any reason you decide to revert back to an older version after having installed
a newer one, a database backup will be required.
We recommend that you avoid using Sciforma in a production environment until you have
installed the newest release and qualified it on a test server. As a reminder, your maintenance
contract includes the delivery of free tokens to be installed in a test environment.

7.2 - Available Platforms

Sciforma is a multi-platform application based on Java technology, enabling a single binary
version to be distributed for all supported operating systems. Sciforma setup programs,
however, are different because they include the operating system-specific Java Virtual
Machine (JVM). Furthermore, UNIX® users most often pre-install the JVM specific to the UNIX
variant they use.
Sciforma now provides three different setup programs:
 Microsoft® Windows® with the corresponding Oracle JVM
 Linux® with the corresponding Oracle JVM
 Generic UNIX with no JVM (must be used after installation of the appropriate JVM)

7.3 - Installation Process

As with previous releases of Sciforma (formerly PSNext), the general procedure for upgrading
to the new version is as follows:
1. Unless you want to continue using your old version of Sciforma (formerly PSNext) in a
separate domain after installing this new version, undeploy the old version from your
application server.
2. Run the Sciforma setup program answering all prompts for information.
3. Deploy Sciforma's newly-installed .war file on your application server.
4. Start the Sciforma Configuration Utility (https://AppServerName/Sciforma
Instance/config.htm), and then select the Test Connect button. After a
successful connection test, select the Create/Update Tables button. When the database
tables have been successfully created or updated, Sciforma is ready to use.

7.4 - Configuration Utility Not Compatible with Older Versions
Older versions of the Sciforma (formerly PSNext) Configuration Utility are not compatible with
Sciforma Servers running this version of Sciforma. If you attempt to use the Configuration
Utility in an invalid configuration, a message appears explaining the version mismatch.
This situation is significant only if your deployment includes multiple Sciforma domains
containing different versions of Sciforma. In this case, when running the Sciforma setup
program, be sure to specify a different destination directory and shortcut name for the
Sciforma Configuration Utility to avoid overwriting the Configuration Utility for your existing
installation.
In addition, for a multi-version/multi-domain installation, you must specify a new and unique
instance name and context name when prompted by the setup program.

7.5 - Data Migration

Sciforma uses a new database structure that is incompatible with previous versions; therefore,
existing Sciforma data must be converted when you upgrade an existing Sciforma domain. The
Sciforma Configuration Utility performs this conversion process automatically when you select
the Create/Update Tables button.
The amount of time required for the conversion process depends on the speed of your server
hardware and the number and size of your published projects. The amount of time required is
roughly equal to the time it would take to open and then save all of your published projects.
The process could take as little as a few minutes if you only have a few, moderately-sized
projects, or up to several hours if you have hundreds of large projects. The Configuration
Utility displays a progress indicator during the conversion process. Be sure to allocate
sufficient time to this part of the upgrade procedure.

7.6 - Important Note about Windows XP

Microsoft ended support for Windows XP as of April 8, 2014. Microsoft no longer provides
security updates or technical support for Windows XP. For complete details, please refer to
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/endofsupport.aspx
As a consequence, Sciforma has dropped support for Windows XP as of that same date, April
8, 2014. This does not mean that Sciforma has abruptly stopped working under Windows XP;
this means, however, that the compatibility and support for such environments will no longer
be covered by Sciforma.

7.7 - Important Note about Java 8

Oracle released the latest public release of Java 7 under update 80 on April 14, 2015. As a
consequence Sciforma encourages customers to upgrade Java clients to version 8.
