THE TEACHER-LIBRARIAN Job Description

A. Personal Qualities The Teacher-Librarian need to be:


1. An experienced teacher, familiar with the schools mission, its courses

and units 2. In possession of Teacher-Librarian Certificate 3. Knowledgeable in all facets of librarianship, including tasks done by library technician and volunteers
4. Professional and friendly, able to assess students needs and interests 5. A reader of both fiction and non-fiction, Christian and non-Christian

literature, and knowledgeable in all genres 6. Computer and internet literate and willing to learn new programs 7. A tactful communicator with administration, staff, students and parents
8. A Christian who is in tune with the community, able to explain and

insist on enforcing published library policies


9. Reliable team player who is able to work with staff and students 10. Able to delegate tasks to other library staff without giving up

responsibilities. 11. A life-long learner whose goals include helping students become discriminating Christian young adults who value learning and reading

B. Tasks and Responsibilities

1. Administration of the Library and Library Program


2. Supervise the library area and create an environment of learning

and quiet reading


3. Acquisition, Organization and Circulation of Library Resources

4. Operate system where borrowed items are returned in a timely manner (Have in place a system of consequences for late or lost resources)
5. Work with classroom teachers developing and teaching units and

library assignments cooperatively 6. Assist staff and students finding appropriate resources
7.

Teach research skills to students, including the use of library resources as well as on-line resources such as OPAC, InfoTrac, EBSCO, etc. Provide information and reference service

9. Recruit and assign tasks to volunteers and TAs


10. Maintain a budget throughout the school year.

11. Keep administration up to date with progress, changes and issues


12. Recommend resources to staff and encourage library activities.

Promote reading to staff and students. Do book talks regularly. Together with English teachers administer reading program.

15. With library technician do inventory every year. 16. Do regular weeding of out of date and damaged resources.

Make sure the library is open at posted times Order, distribute, supervise and take in student textbooks.

19. Supervise AV equipment which are catalogued and stored in the library.
20. Attend library functions and conferences.

THE LIBRARY TECHNICIAN

C. Tasks of the Library Technician


1. Catalogue and process materials and generally all technical aspects

of the library 2. Check in periodicals 3. Print labels for barcodes and student names 4. Keep track of library supplies, such as book covers, security strips, etc. 5. Assist in annual inventory taking of library and textbook collections 6. Assist in maintaining textbook program
7. When the teacher-librarian is absent, take over supervision of the

library, including teacher assistants and volunteers


8. Any tasks delegated by the teacher-librarian, which may include

bulletin board displays, overdue lists, supervision of TAs and more.


9. Attend workshops on topics related to the technical field of libraries
