Looking back at my younger years, I am sometimes astounded at how my life has turned out
because of the community I live in. Through the years, I have developed an exceptional and
profound sense of morality, which has helped me live my life in a manner that is right and
acceptable in my society. One of the moral standards I have observed and acquired from my
community as I was growing up is the ethic of reciprocity. In my community, I have observed that if
I do not want others to disrespect me, then, I should not be rude to them and I should treat them
with respect as well. I should be a person of trust and compassion. Also, another vital moral
standard I have acquired is to not mess with and not tamper with other people’s stuff. I learned
that stealing, killing, and spreading false information are all wrong and should not be tolerated
within the community. Furthermore, it is also important to take note of extending horizons in order
to achieve growth and development, both personal and social. Every single day, I am reminded to
help those less fortunate. I live in a community where most people’s primary source of livelihood is
agriculture, and life is really not easy, especially for those who do not have their own piece of land.
Then I realized that extending one’s hand and caring for other people, even in the smallest way
possible, is such a fulfilling thing to do. Given all these moral standards I have mentioned, I can say
that my morality is really an integral feature of my character since it tends to mold the ethical
foundation I have.
bound to make some mistakes or wrong decisions along the way. In everyday life, moral
challenges arise all too often. Indeed, I have no influence over whether I am confronted with an
ethical issue in life, but I believe that I do have power over how I will respond to it. One of the
dilemmas I have faced in my life is when I am still living in my dorm. It was a Wednesday at
midnight, and my friend asked me if she could sleep over at my dorm. At that time, she was
coming from a dance practice with her colleagues, and it was dangerous for her to go home and
commute by herself since it was already late at night. That is why she messaged me and asked for
a favor. However, it is also the policy of our dorm that other people, aside from the tenants, are
not allowed to go inside. The owner trusts us that we will abide by the policies they have. I was so
confused and didn't know what to do at the time, and I was faced with two contradictory options:
let my friend sleep over to ensure her safety, even if it meant breaking our dorm's policy, or refuse
her favor so that I wouldn't betray the trust of the owner of the dorm I lived in. After considering all
of the pros and cons of my options, I decided to let my friend sleep that night in my dorm for her
safety. I could not risk letting her go home by herself and thinking all that night that something
might have happened to her. What I just did the next day was inform the owner about this, so that
she’d understand why I let someone sleep and broke the policy. Aside from this, I have
experienced a lot of moral dilemmas in my community. The good thing about having experienced
this is that I get to delve deeper into my morality and gain a better understanding of how things
around me should be. 21 years have already passed, I am still facing a lot of dilemmas surrounding
me, but I am sure that I am bringing a lot of lessons that taught me to become a morally
responsible individual.
Given all of these experiences, I am grateful to be part of a culturally rich community that allowed
me to discover new paths of learning and realizations about the importance of having ethical
principles in life. The culture in my surroundings has helped me raise awareness and appreciate
the need for ethics by widening my perspective and being more mindful of doing the right things.
In our community, we are raised to be polite to other people. This includes being respectful by
using "po" and "opo" and practicing "pagmamano," being able to listen to and understand what
other people say, being aware of their feelings, and many more. In addition, we are introduced to
the concept of "pakikisama". Pakikisama is a common Filipino trait that means "getting along with
others" in its most basic sense. It comprises a true innate enjoyment of togetherness. Indeed, my
appreciation of doing what is right is somehow in line with this concept because my decisions or
actions do affect other people. These practices have helped me understand why there is a need to
be aware of ethical principles. It is also important to know the community where I am and how it
differs from others. However, when we learn about different cultures, it is also crucial to realize
how much we have in common. People have extremely varied perspectives on the world, but they
all know what it's like to get up each morning and anticipate the adventures that await them.
Every single one of us is a human being. We all have feelings of great love and a desire to do what
we know is right.
