Elements of product design

Product deisgn is a process of commercializing the products and design them in a way to be

ready to sale to the end customers. It incolves brainstorming, collection of ideas, incoportaing

augmentated benefits. There are three main things to design the product and these are 1) concept

building 2) analysis and 3) synthesis. In analysis, market gap and demand for a partuclar product

is identified, product offerings are compared with those already available in the market. Concept

defines product scope, its market niche, benefits and current trend in the market. In synthesis,

product development is measured in terms of selecting the best ideas from the brainstorming.

Specifically, following product elements are considered in the product deisgn:

 Product prototype

 Benefits give by product

 Definition of problem

 Team development to create the product

 Product testing

 Trial production

 Budget estimates

 Funding sources

Product name is bra-insert wearble device that is used to detect early detection of breast cancer.

This would solve problem of diagnosing the cancer at the early stage. Research suggests that

early detection of cancer save 1/6 of the women from the breat cancer deaths. This product saves

important asset of society from deaths, therefore product name is “Dr.breast”.

Branstorming

Ideas will be brainstormed, how product will be designes, who will participate in the product

desig, who would be the stakeholders, what will be the cost of each device who will sponsor the

funds and what age of women can use the device. Furthermore, what will be the revenue this

product will generate in next 5 years and when will the breakeven achieved, these all ideas will

be gathered to create a final design of product.

Planning

In this step, product design will be planned in terms of its schedule, quantity of products. Vlaue

proposition is measured to identify the vision and brand image of product. Product cost and

budget is planned and final decisions are carried under a team.

Execution

After planning the product design and segretating all the activities execution of product design is

carried. Product is deisgned on the basis of all the planning done in step 3.

Service design

Service design is a way to improve intangible ideas and communicarion in the organization. It

aims to improve the infrasturture by providing quality services and satisfy customer needs. There

are key elements used in the service design, quality, engagement of employees and improving
infrastructure in the organization. Service design helps to select only those services which are

required to be delivered at the end of right people and involves all the benefits that a service can

give.

 Benefits incorporated with the services is also an impprtant element.

Service design example

Understanding the problem is the first step of service design, in this example: service would be a

transport for the females who face problems traveling from their workplaces, universities or

colleges or any other purpose. A separate transport service for the females will be set up for them

so that they can overcome their problems of conyance.

This service of transport will solve societal crimes of harassments and rapes. A safety will be

ensured to them and overall be a positive impact.

Next step is to collect and brainstorm the ideas and set out the plan of how service will be

designed, what costs will be incurred and who will provide the funds for the transport services.

After selecting ideas and planning the service, execution phase will be started to deliver quality

services and incorporate the beenfits to the customers.


Service and product design in operation management are particularly related to the smooth

flow of resources, information, material and other activities.
