1. What are carbohydrates ?

Carbohydrates, or carbs, are sugar


molecules. Along with proteins and fats,
carbohydrates are one of the three main
nutrients found in foods and drinks. Your
body breaks down carbohydrates into
glucose. Glucose, or blood sugar, is the main
source of energy for your body's cells,
tissues, and organs.

to energy. The energy is used to
support bodily functions and
physical activity.

Molecular Structure
Carbohydrate is a naturally occurring
compound, with a general chemical
formula Cx(H²O)y made up of
molecules of carbon (C), hydrogen (H)
and Oxygen (O).

Benefits of
Carbohydrates

● Carbohydrates are important as your


body's main source of energy

● They help to fuel your kidney, brain


muscle and central nervous system
Side Effects of
Carbohydrates

● Too much carbohydratescan slow


down your metabolism rate. This will
cause you to gain more weight.

● Too little carbohydrates will result in


constipation. This is due to the lack of
fibre and minerals.

Whole food such as whole wheats are healthier

Process carbs are easier and faster to get but it
is not as healthy as fresh ones
