Do Now: Write about a real or imagined day in your life in which you use color imagery to describe
the setting and the events that happen, as the author (and the narrator Death) did in the Prologue.
Ex: The day was gray, the color of Europe.
First up is something white. Of the blinding kind.
Next is signature black….it was the darkest moment before the dawn.

Kristallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass")

On November 9, 1938, the Nazis unleashed a wave of pogroms against Germany's Jews. In the
space of a few hours, thousands of synagogues and Jewish
businesses and homes were damaged or destroyed. This event
came to be called Kristallnacht ("Night of Broken Glass") for the
shattered store windowpanes that carpeted German streets.
The pretext for this violence was the November 7
assassination of a German diplomat in Paris, Ernst vom Rath, by
Herschel Grynszpan, a Jewish teenager whose parents, along
with 17,000 other Polish Jews, had been recently expelled from
the Reich. Though portrayed as spontaneous outbursts of
popular outrage, these pogroms were calculated acts of
retaliation carried out by the SA, SS, and local Nazi party
organizations.
Stormtroopers killed at least 91 Jews and injured many others. For the first time, Jews were
arrested on a massive scale and transported to Nazi concentration camps. About 30,000 Jews were
sent to Buchenwald, Dachau, and Sachsenhausen, where hundreds died within weeks of arrival.
Release came only after the prisoners arranged to emigrate and agreed to transfer their property to
"Aryans."
Kristallnacht culminated the escalating violence against Jews that began during the
incorporation of Austria into the Reich in March 1938. It also signaled the fateful transfer of
responsibility for "solving" the "Jewish Question" to the SS.

Part Six: (Death’s Diary: 1942 – Death’s Diary: Cologne)

 Death is extremely overworked in 1942. Death is busy like in ‘79, like 1346’.

(50-60% of the population of Europe).

a) ____________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________
…she [Liesel] stood on Munich Street and watched a single giant cloud come over the hills like
a white monster….The sun was eclipsed, and in its place, a white beast with a gray heart
watched the town.

7) Why is this more effective than saying, ‘a cloud crossed the sky’?

___________________________________________________________________________________
8) Cliffhanger – What is the cliffhanger at the end of page 324?
___________________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________

Allegory: an allegory is a work in which characters, events, or settings symbolize, or represent,
something else. Max’s illustrated story for Liesel is allegorical because the events and actions are
symbolic and not intended to be taken literally. For instance:

Soon, the demand for the lovely ugly words and symbols
increased to such a point that the forests grew. Many
people were needed to maintain them. Some were
employed to climb the trees and throw the words down
to those below. They were then fed directly into the
remainder of the Fuhrer’s people, not to mention those
who came back for more.

Hitler’s Germany?
