Childhood and early career

Public reaction
Eric Cantona was born in Paris in 1966. He grew up in Marseille, and played his
first professional game of football for a local club, Auxerre, in 1983. He played
his first game for France in 1988, but he was never a great success in his home
country.
In 1922, he decided to move to England. In his first year in England, he played
for Leeds United and helped them beat Manchester United in the League. But
the next year, he was transferred to Manchester and there he became a great
hero. The Manchester United fans loved him and called him “Le Roi”, the King
of football. In 1996, he won the footballer of the Year Award.
In 1997, he retired from professional football and started a new career as a film
actor. He has appeared in a number of films, both French and English, including
the Oscar nominated Elizabeth.

Vincent Van Gogh was born in Zundert, a small village in the South of the
Netherlands, in 1853. At school, he was very good at languages and this helped
him get a job with an International art dealer. He worked with this company in
both London and Paris. But after a few years he lost his job and for the next six
years of his life he worked as a teacher and preacher.
In 1880, he decided to become an artist. His first paintings were dark and
depressing and they didn’t sell. He moved to Paris and started studying the
works of French impressionists. He discovered the power of colour and his
paintings changed a lot, but they still didn’t sell. In 1988 he moved to Provence
in the South of France and there he painted some of his most famous paintings.
As a painter, this was one of the best times in his life, but he was depressed and
he suffered from hallucinations. One night, after an argument with his painter friend, Gaugin, he cut off a
piece of his left ear.
In 1890 he shot himself. He died as a poor man. The world did not discover his genius as an artist and the
power of his paintings until after his death. He is now one of the world’s most famous painters.
