The Tomatina
The Tomatina is a huge tomato fight. It happens in Buñol, Spain, on the last
Wednesday of every August. The week before, there is music, parades, dancing and
fireworks. On Wednesday at 10 a.m., officials put thousands of tomatoes in the town
square. They fire a water cannon, and people start throwing the tomatoes at each
other. For safety, participants must squash the tomatoes before throwing them. They
should also wear protective goggles and gloves. After one hour, the water cannon
fires again. Everyone stops throwing tomatoes and the clean-up begins. The Tomatina

has been a tradition since the mid-1940s, but nobody knows why. Some say that it
began after someone played a joke on a bad musician.
