Board Members Dr. Mark Jones, Superintendent FROM: Brenda Dawson, Director of Assessment and Accountability RE: SOL Pass Rates DATE: September 6, 2022 During the 2021-2022 school year, the division average for SOL pass rates was at or above the state average for 26 of 28 SOL tests. Please refer to Attachment A for a listing of SOL pass rates by school. These pass rates are official pass rates released by the Virginia Department of Education. As explained by Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow, student achievement in all areas remained well below pre-pandemic levels state-wide during the 2021-2022 assessment year. The prolonged impact of the pandemic on student learning is still evident in Pittsylvania County, but SOL pass rates at the division level show less overall learning loss than SOL pass rates at the state level. Attachment B shows the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pass rates for both the state and the division. According to accreditation ratings released by the Virginia Department of Education, all eighteen schools in Pittsylvania County are accredited for the 2022-2023 school year, based on assessment results from the 2021-2022 school year. It is important to note that state accreditation rules changed during the 2018-2019 school year. In addition to continuing to be accountable for pass rates of all students, schools are now accountable for the following school quality indicators: (1) achievement gaps in pass rates for subgroups in English, (2) achievement gaps in pass rates for subgroups in math, (3) chronic absenteeism, (4) Graduation and Completion Index at the high school level, ‘and (5) dropout rate at the high school level. Due to the pandemic, chronic absenteeism ‘was not included in accreditation ratings for the 2021-2022 assessment year. Please refer to Attachment C for state accreditation ratings. For federal accountability, Pittsylvania County did not have any schools designated as being in need of comprehensive support and improvement.
