ABSTRACT

This project is focused on building a social networking website for the

Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN). It has been noticed observed that
socializing aids in the improvement of activities in the department activities.
The existing problems at ADUNof the schools's student portal such as - the site
proper handling and organization of documents, archives and general public
information that is accessible to all members of the university, the ease of
establishing groups or platforms of like-minded individuals - were identified,
analyzed, and we propose this computerized technique as a result of a series of
interviews and document examinations. This project aims to design a solution to
improve the communication barrier that exist in the university, through the use
of the internet technology and tools. It will also include recommendations on
how to successfully implement the computerized procedure and overcome the
hurdles that would otherwise hinder the system from being properly
implemented. This documentation describes the methods we used to create and
implement a social network for ADUN, as well as its application.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN) was established as a Public-
Private-Partnership (PPP) with the primary partners being Nigerian Navy
Holdings (a subsidiary organization of the Nigerian Navy) and Hellenic
Education Nigeria - (a private consultancy with international educators).
The University's objectives are multifaceted: to broaden the frontiers of
knowledge in various academic disciplines in Nigeria; to use university
education as a tool for development and the enhancement of human welfare;
to meet Nigeria's nation-building challenges; and to address the acute
shortage of personnel in various sectors of the Nigerian economy (ADUN,
2022).
At the Inception of the University, there were a handful of members of staff
and students. All finding various ways and methods to communicate
effectively to achieve the common goal of improving the lifestyle and
atmosphere of the university campus. An e-mail portal was used by staff and
students to communicate in terms of uploading and submitting assignments,
interacting with each other for academic-related matters - G-mail was the
service provider of this portal – The portal was deactivated after a year, due
to the reduced utilization of the platform by staff and students. This was due
to the fact that there were preferred alternatives by members of the
university, like WhatsApp and Telegram. Even though both were social
network platforms on mobile devices, they had unique features also.
WhatsApp being the more popular one of them, was the most used platform
for distributing information and sharing documents and course materials.
Telegram on the other hand, proved to be the idea platform for handling
online lectures. Telegram allowed for the voting system, which aided
lecturers in conducting attendance checks. Ideally a system that can

7
combine the key features of both effective platforms would suit the
operations of the university
With the numerous Owing to the steady increase in the number of personnel
and students in the university and the diversity of departments in the three
(3) differentifferent faculties, there is a growing need for ainvolvement swift
and robust communication channel between students and the university
managementfaculty., and The proposed approach attempts to meet that need.
This social network's objective isresearch seeks to encourage effective
communication among university members by providing subject themes
topics(e.g Sports, News and Politics, Science and Technology etc) and
discussion platforms forums within those topicshemes. The technology will
save time while also boosting the ease of learning, performing research, and
socializing with university members and departments from various faculties.
This project's purpose is to build a social network platform for members of
this prestigious university while also promoting the university's image. "The
university's mission is to advance the frontiers of human knowledge by
providing learning, research, and service using cutting-edge technologies to
meet current educational demands in order to overcome the myriad of
challenges confronting humanity," according to the university's mission
statement (ADUN, 2022). This social network will be one of the tools used
to achieve that goal.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

These are the justifications problems that have been enlisted bbased onehind
the research that has driven the proposed system's development and
implementation:
I. Social Life: The need to improve social connections among students and
faculties, the lack of an engaging environment, and the need to increase
teamwork. We have observed and discovered an increased frequency of

8
students supporting each other when using technology in the classroom
through research. Many technology-based assignments incorporate other
factors, which necessitates students seeking assistance from their peers or the
teacher. Furthermore, when students are divided into small groups, those
who are more technologically skilled can assist their less experienced peers
(Walden University, 2022).
II. Convenience: Because this social network is a website, it is available to all
employees and students whenever and wherever they want. The network will
be easier to access now that the school has installed Wireless Fidelity
connections throughout the campus.
III. Organization and Access of Information: One of the scenarios for which
this system will provide a solution is the process by which school officials
must communicate vital information to members of the Admiralty University
community. Because people who do not own Android or iOS devices will be
unable to access the Luminary Leaders group on WhatsApp. This university
has placed computers and internet connections in key positions throughout
campus, making it very easy for any student or staff member to surf the web
and access information posted on the internet. The proposed system will
address information inaccessibility.
IV. Study Group: Is this advancement detrimental to your pupils' learning or
beneficial? According to the Pew Research Center, 92% of instructors
believe the internet has a significant impact on their capacity to access
content, tools, and materials (Walden University, 2022). As previously said,
when students are allocated to small groups, the more technologically
advanced students can assist their less experienced peers. Because of the
existence of this system, students will seek out and learn from one another
when they encounter challenges. Some students' academic achievement is
also hampered by a shortage of study groups on campus. The suggested

9
system allows prospective students to develop forums unique to the subject
issue, where they will engage with one another.

1.3 AIM OF THE RESEARCH

We intend Tto develop solutions for the designing and implementingation
of ADUN social network. This systemis seekssocial network in order to
automate operations connected to ADUN community engagement and social
life,. boost socializsationm of theamong students and staff of the institution,
improve collaboration, create a more engaged environment, incorporate a
more inclusive different learning style and, as a result, the educational level
by building an automated andby means of a web-based application for
student online communication and lowering anti-socialism.

1.4 SPECIFIC RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

This study is being conducted to achieve the following goals:
I. To a establish a more effective means ofdevelop better communication
between students and staff.
II. To lower anti-socialist sentimentimprove socialization among students and
staff.
III. To establishnhance effective distribution of information.
IV. To raise the learning curve of students.
V. To enable students find reading partners.
VI. To promoteimprove the schools’ global image.brand globally by having an
online presence.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

10
Integrating technology into everyday life has resulted in dramatic changes in
all sectors of life, such as including interpersonal communication, the
economyics, the entertainment industry, and education to mention but a few.
Today, more than ever, students are confronted with changes that affect not
only the way they learn, but also their daily lives. The same is true for
organizations, schools, and businesses. It is nearly impossible to overlook
the enormous influence that this type of endeavor could have on future
generations of pupils. Children grow up with laptops, tablets, numerous
gadgets, and current digital systems, so they are well prepared for
educational modernization. The readiness of students for technology in the
classroom is wonderful news, because the digital age presents new
difficulties not only in education, but in all aspects of life. As a result, it is
critical that children learn to harness all of modern society's potential while
still in school (Allison Academy, 2022).
This social network acts as a link between students and the schooluniversity.
Students will have access to important school information, as well as the
opportunity to express their ideas or proposals on the platform, either
individually or through the Student Representative Council. This project
will also encourage students to utilize the Internet for more than just playing
video games or browsing social media, but also to get information from the
school and their friends.
Given what has been said, the importance of developing and deploying an
online social network website for Admiralty University cannot be
understated.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE RESEARCH

I. The proposed system is purely for Admiralty University’s use and
convenience.
II. For portability, the system will be adapted to computers, phones, and tablets.

11
III. It will be open to both ADUN community members and the general public.
IV. The system will be designed to be responsive for browsers running on
Windows, Android, and iOS.
V. It will run and be accessed by business actors at any time of the day i.e. 24/7

1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

I. Time constraints – because there are only three months to finish the work
while still attending other classes in the same semester.
II. Lack of resources – paid hosting services, which require substantial sums of
money in order to gain more bandwidth to work with, and APIs, which
likewise require more money to use their full functionality. These elements
impede the implementation of certain system functions.
