A minimum of three (3 quizzes must be given before and
after MIDTERMǀ. Each quiz is 33,33, 34 points.
In order to be exempted a general average of 45% is needed
and for those who are going to take the final exam 40%
final average is required
Course coverage
1. Determinants and Matrices
2. Complex Quantities
3. Vector Analysis
4. Laplace and Inverse Laplace Transforms

The sloping line of elements from a11 to ann is called the principal
diagonal of the determinant.
Determination of a determinant
1. Diagonal method applicable up to 3x3 determinant only.
Transpose the two column to the right and use the diagonal in
multiplying. Remember that in multiplying you always multiply 3
numbers. All arrows going up are positive and all arrows going down
are negative.
1. Co- factor method applicable for determinant greater than 3x3.
Minor, Cofactor and Laplace Expansion

Minor of an element in a determinant is the determinant obtained by

deleting the row and the column which intersect in that element

Cofactor of any element is its minor with proper sign. The sign of an
element in the ith row and jth column is (-1) i+j.
By Laplace expansion a determinant can be expanded in terms of any
row or column as follows:
Multiply each element of the row (or column) in term of which we
intend expanding the determinant., by its cofactor and then add up all
the terms.
