Short Operation Instructions
ERASPEC – FTIR Analyzer
Setting up the analyzer
Position the analyzer properly on the bench, connect
the outlet tube and the waste container to the left-hand
side of the analyzer and connect the power cable to
the power inlet.
Turning on the analyzer
Press the main power switch. The analyzer will
automatically display the measuring menu:
Reference spectrum
A reference spectrum can be measured any time by
pressing the “REFERENCE”button (it turns green) and
then RUN.
It is recommended that 10 minutes after switching on,
a reference is measured this way. After that,
references are measured automatically when needed.
Selecting a method
Method “Gasoline”is the standard method for gasoline
testing, and method “Diesel”the standard Diesel
testing method.
Methods “EN238”for benzene content and “EN14078”
fro FAME are optional and not active unless
specifically ordered and installed.
Sample ID and Operator name
Enter the SAMPLE ID and the OERATOR name by
touching the respective white field and entering the
names via the keyboard, or by using the drop down
lists (touch the red bar left of the respective field).
Selecting a library
For calculated properties, like RON, MON, Cetane
numbers and distillation temperatures, a data base or
library is necessary.
Different libraries can be created and stored on the
instrument. To select a data base, press “SELECT
LIBRARIES”. The display shows the currently used
data base in the right field “used”and other available,
but currently unused libraries in the left field
“available”:
Move the data bases between the fields using the “>>”
and “<<”buttons.
Press OK to return to the measuring menu.
Filling the sample
Connect Luer tip of the yellow filling tube to the inlet on
the right side of the analyzer and insert the tube into
the sample.
Starting the measurement
Start the measurement by pressing either the RUN
button on the display or the “RUN”hard key on the
front panel (directly below the displayed RUN button).
As soon as the measurement is started, the screen
displays the current status of the measurement
sequence (Selecting cell, Filling, Stabilize IR-Source,
Stabilize Detector, Data Scan). The sample is
automatically introduced into the ERASPEC.
When the system is completely filled, please remove
the inlet tube from the sample and confirm on the
display with “Ok”:
When the measurement is finished, the sample is
removed from the analyzer and disposed of into the
waste container. At the same time, the test results are
displayed (the example below is for gasoline analysis,
the result display for Diesel is similar):
Use the red scroll bar on the right side to scroll through
the entire list.
Press “OK”to return to the measurement menu or
“RUN”to immediately start a new measurement.
The entire measurement takes approximately one
minute.
Press “Add”to add this sample to a data base (see
below in “Adding a sample to the data base”), or press
“Print”to print this result on a connected printer.
Results menu
The results of previous measurements can be viewed
in the results menu. The results are shown and are
numbered and ordered by date and time:

Touch the red number field to the left of the list in the
line of the measurement for which you wan to see the
results. The result list of for this measurement will be
displayed in the same format as directly after a
measurement.
Use the buttons , , , and to move the list
down or up line by line or page by page, and to
return to the first page.
Press OK to return to the result menu.
Adding a sample to the data base
If properties like RON, MON, Cetane number, and
distillation temperatures are known for a sample, it can
be added to the data base. After measuring this
sample, go to the result menu and mark this sample by
touching the name of the sample. Then press “Add to
Lib”. Enter the known properties in the respective line.
If a property or several properties are not known, leave
the filed blank. Press OK to stored this sample in the
data base.
Import and export libraries using a memory stick
A memory stick can be connected to one of the USB
connectors of the instrument at any time
If a memory stick is connected, the fields “Export to”
and “Import from”become active, and the directory on
the memory stick that is used for the data transfer is
shown.
To export the libraries that are stored on the
ERASPEC to the memory stick, press “Export to”.
To import libraries stored on the memory stick to the
ERASPEC, press “Import from”.
After the data transfer, the memory stick is unmounted
and can then be safely removed.
The data base is stored with the extension .lib. It is a
tab-separated data file which can be read using Excel.
