ASSIGNMENT 3

1. Have you seen a magnet?

Yes, I have seen a magnet. It can be a U-shaped or the usual black rectangular-
shaped, which attracts other metal objects such as metal spoons/forks, paper clips, and
staple wires.
2. What about an electromagnet?
Yes, it is a metal surrounded by a coil of wire, which generates a magnetic
field using an electric current.
3. What are their similarities, if any?
Both the magnets and electromagnets have imaginary magnetic field lines.
4. What are their differences, if any?
Magnets are permanently magnetized, while electromagnets are temporarily
magnetized as it needs an electric current to pass through to be magnetized.

Sample Problems with Answers

1. There is a particle with a charge of 11μC moving perpendicular through a

magnetic field with a strength of 7T. What is the force on the particle?

Solution:
The equation for force on a moving charged particle in a magnetic field is

Because the charge is moving perpendicularly through the magnetic field, we

don't have to worry about the cross product, and the equation becomes simple
multiplication.
2. A 5μC charge is moving through a 35T magnetic field at a speed of
from parallel to the magnetic field. What is the force on the charge?

Solution:
The equation for force on a moving charged particle in a magnetic field is:

The cross product is:

Above, θ is the degree from parallel the charge is moving. The charge is
moving at from parallel, so the equation, once we plug in our numbers, is:
