Lesson 7 : Matters and Materials
EXERCISE
A) Tick the correct option.
1) All objects have _____.
a) volume b) weight c) both (a) and (b)
2) Everything around us is made up of _______.
a) atoms b) solid c) air
3) Matter exists in _______ states.
a) one b) two c) three
4) Molecules are packed ______ in a stone.
a) loosely b) tightly c) very loosely
5) Air filled in a football is _____.
a) solid b) liquid c) gas
B) State whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE.
1) Solids have fixed size and shape. - TRUE
2) Liquids do not have a definite volume . - FALSE
3) Liquids have a definite shape. - FALSE
4) Gases spread out to fill any size. - TRUE
5) Gases have fixed shape and size. - FALSE
C) Fill in the blanks.
1) Atoms combine to form molecule .
2) Liquids do not have a definite shape .
3) The process of water changing to vapour on heating is called evaporation .
4) The process of water vapour changing to water on cooling is called condensation .
D) Match the following.
Column - A Column - B
1) Solid Liquid a) condensation
2) Liquid Gas b) melting
3) Gas Liquid c) freezing
4) Liquid Solid d) evaporation
F) Short Answer Type Questions :
1) Which state of matter has molecules packed very loosely and lying apart?
Ans. The molecules in gases are very loosely packed and lying apart.
2) What are the three states of matter?
Ans. The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
3) What happens when ice is heated?
Ans. When ice is heated it changes into water.
1
4) What is condensation?
Ans. The process of water vapour changing to water on cooling is called condensation.
5) What is a solvent?
Ans. The liquid (water) in which the solid dissolves is called solvent .
G) Long Answer Type Questions:
1) What are the properties that every object possesses?
Ans. The properties that every object possesses are :
1) All objects take up space
2) All the objects have weight.
2) Explain with example, the presence of gas in liquids.
Ans. When we add salt to drinking soda, bubbles of carbon dioxide gas come out. This shows that
drinking soda is a liquid with carbon dioxide gas dissolved in it.
3) What are miscible and immiscible liquids?
Ans. Liquids that mixes well in water is called miscible liquids. Liquids which do not dissolve in water is
called immiscible liquids.
4) Why does salt disappear in water?
Ans. Salt disappear in water because the molecules of salt spread through the water and occupy empty
spaces in between the molecules of water.
5) What is freezing? What happens when water is cooled at or below 0C?
Ans. Freezing is the cooling of liquid at very low temperature. When water is cooled at or below 0C it
changes into solid ice.
H) Draw a labelled diagram of the changing states of matter i.e. solid liquid gas and
gas liquid solid
