Introduction
With the variety of process control systems available, it is often necessary to convert an input signal into
a format that the control system will accept. Signal conditioners take signals from an assortment of field
instruments such as thermocouples and RTDs, and convert those signals into any of several standard
instrument signals (1-5 V, 4-20 mA, etc.) while providing isolations.
Signal conditioners are also beneficial to the accurate transfer of these signals and the elimination of
ground loops.
Pepperl+Fuchs signal conditioners utilize the latest technology, offering unparalleled protection against
ground loops while maintaining optimum signal accuracy and complete isolation. There are three basic
types of KF signal conditioners:
Analog Isolators: These units require a separate power supply and provide signal
conditioning and 3-way isolation to various input signals.
Limit Alarms: This class of signal conditioners provides two Form C relay outputs with
adjustable high and low switchpoints and selectable control safe and normal operation.
They also require a separate power supply and provide 3-way isolation.
The latter two categories are fully field-configurable and provide 1,800 VDC isolation separating input,
output and power supply. Input and output ranges, modes of operation, switchpoints, etc., can be
programmed in the field via DIP switches on the side of the housing. Some models also offer a PC
interface. Input, zero, and span are adjustable by potentiometer to 50% for all input ranges. The wide-
ranging capabilities and field-configurable settings allow for numerous options in a diverse range of
applications.
All P+F analog isolators and limit alarms also contain the ASIC chip for increased reliability. ASIC (Appli-
cation Specific Integrated Circuitry) substantially reduces failures by virtually eliminating discrete com-
ponents and their solder joints where most faults occur. Printed circuit board connections are reduced
by 70%.
