Project Outline

Location of the project

Municipality of Breves, State of Pará.
Country
Brazil
Region
Americas
City / Town / Village
Breves
Other information
The municipality of Breves is located in the northeast of Brazil in the State of Pará, a long distance from the
country's iconic urban areas of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, 2,469 kilometres and 2,490 kilometres respectively. On
the other hand, the capital of the state of Pará, Belém, is only 222 kilometres away, a journey that can be made
either by plane or by boat, which is the most common option. The municipality has a tropical rainforest climate and
is surrounded by countless rivers and tributaries within the Amazon basin, making it part of the Marajó Island.

According to the 2016 population census, provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the total
population of Breves is estimated at 104,497 people, half of whom live in the city of Breves while the rest of the
population is scattered in different points along the rivers of the municipality. It has a population density of 10.8
/km², which denotes the great geographical dispersion that characterises the territory, as well as an important
problem of connectivity and mobility since the only way to access these communities is by river transport.

Families tend to settle in small nuclei of between 3 and 10 houses by the river, with an average of 5 people per
house. It is in these settlements where the rural schools are located, which depend on the municipality, which has
more than 200 schools distributed throughout the territory.

Organisation of the communities
The riverside families are organised in associations that represent their interests towards the municipality and we
understand as community those groups of families that live in a certain area and that share the same interests:
- Health Point
- Community school or school
- Productive processes
- Family relationships
- Agro-extractivism cooperatives

General description of the project

The ICESA “Innovation Center for Energy Sovereignty of the Amazon” is a project that was born to design and
implement solutions for sustainable mobility and access to energy through the training of entrepreneurs from rural
communities in the Brazilian Amazon. The project has 3 lines of work: the creation of the ICESA through the
Association of Ribereños de Breves, the training of community members in sustainable energy and mobility
technologies, and the construction of two sustainable and economical ships that allow to replace the current diesel
boats used by rural schools.

Since 2018, Light Humanity has supported the Association of Ribereños del Río Jupatituba to provide energetic and
sustainable solutions to the challenge of using kerosene as lighting in rural homes in the Amazon. Since then, the
project, managed by the Association itself, has been able to bring solar energy to more than 1,100 homes in the
municipality of Breves, generating a great positive impact on the local economy and on the health of the inhabitants
of the rural areas of Breves. .

2
Draft
Another challenge pending for the community to be addressed is the lack of fuel that prevents students from being
able to attend school regularly, since the school transport service barely has the capacity to buy enough fuel to
fulfill this service every day. classes of each month.

That is why Light Humanity proposes to support once again the Association of Ribereños to lead the creation of the
Innovation Center for Energy Sovereignty (ICESA), in which local entrepreneurs are trained to be able to
manufacture boat solutions sustainable to face the challenge of school transport. Being the direct beneficiaries of
the project, the students of the school who will be able to attend classes on a regular basis, the shipbuilders
themselves when acquiring new skills for their employability, and finally the community will benefit from a
reduction in local pollution of its natural environment.

The project that is proposed to the Alstom Foundation will have a total duration of 14 months and is divided into 2
phases:

The 1st phase of the project (October 2021-January 2022) will aim to create the ICESA. During this phase, the
collaboration agreements between the interested parties will be consolidated and the strategy of phase 2 will be
reviewed.

The second phase of the project (January 2022-December 2022) will aim to select, train and train local
entrepreneurs so that they are able to carry out the construction of the first two sustainable ships in these months.

To ensure the scalability of the project, the resulting designs will be licensed under “Creative Commons” so that
other communities can benefit from advances in the development of new sustainable energy and mobility solutions.

Main challenges to be addressed
The main energy challenges facing the community are described below:

CHALLENGE 1: ACCESS TO ELECTRICAL ENERGY IN HOME AND SCHOOLS

Currently, 90% of the rural population of the Amazon does not have access to electricity, which makes them
dependent on fossil fuels such as kerosene to light their nights, an unsustainable source of energy and detrimental
to the health and economy of homes . According to the World Health Organization (WHO), annually 1.5 million
people die from inhalation of toxic fumes caused by the burning of fossil fuel inside homes and, in addition, more
than 50% of deaths Premature infants under 5 years of age are caused by particles inhaled indoors with polluted
air. In fact, respiratory diseases affect 1 in 4 of the members of the riverside families of the Breves community,
pneumonia being the most common respiratory disease. On the other hand, the daily use of kerosene and other
fuels weighs down the household economy of households, having to spend more than 30% of their income on
buying fossil fuels.

According to CELPA (responsible for the extension of the electrical network in the state of Pará, Brazil) there is no
plan in the next 50 years for the electrical network to reach this part of the population of Breves, which forces them
to continue depending on fossil fuels like kerosene. This was the reason why, through Light Amazonas, the alliance
between Light Humanity and the Association of Ribereños de Breves, we began to work to guarantee access to

3
Draft
energy at home and soon also in schools.

CHALLENGE 2: SUSTAINABLE AND RELIABLE SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM

In the community of the Japatituba river, where the headquarters of Light Amazonas and the Association of
Ribereños de Amiraldo and Tatiana are located, there is a rural school called Santa Izabel, with just over 200
students, who cannot attend school on a regular basis. Due to the fact that the fuel that the municipality delivers on
a monthly basis to the boatmen to provide the school transport service is usually used up. This situation is repeated
in the other 230 rural schools in the municipality, where students do not have the capacity to go to school. This
problem generates frustration among teachers and students, since teaching is interrupted by someone else's cause
the last week of each month. This, in turn, leads to a high rate of school failure and early school leaving,
perpetuating the socioeconomic conditions of the community and condemning the future of future generations.
(SEE ANNEX school failure)

CHALLENGE 3: ACCESS TO TOOLS AND TECHNICAL TRAINING TO ADDRESS THE ABOVE CHALLENGES
ASSOCIATED WITH SUSTAINABLE ENERGY FOR TRANSPORTATION, HOME AND SCHOOLS
Our approach to development cooperation is based on dealing with root problems looking at the causes and not the
consequences, and therefore we consider that the main challenge, which causes challenges 1 and 2 previously
mentioned are not being addressed, is the lack of training, knowledge and resources of the community itself to
solve its main energy challenges.

Our way of seeing cooperation also has the focus of self-management, that is, we seek to train local communities so
that they are the ones who manage the change and trying to empower them so that their solutions allow them
future viability and not dependence.

That said, both citizens and local cooperatives and companies are lacking spaces for entrepreneurship and specific
training that allow them to solve the challenges of access to energy and sustainable mobility.

Living in the rural areas of the Amazon, means a constant exclusion and disconnection with respect to the services
offered in the cities, this is because the political and economic representation of the Brazilian municipalities of the
Amazon focuses on the cities, leaving the education services and entrepreneurship opportunities in rural areas.
This makes it even more necessary to empower the community with models of self-management and community
work so that they are more sovereign in matters as important as mobility, energy and education, addressing the
challenges from their own ways of doing and respecting their culture.

Because institutions do not invest in these rural regions, we have to empower rural communities so that they are
the engine of their own change. Below we list a series of specific deficiencies that these rural communities face:

Lack of educational training in general and professional specifically in solar energy, electricity, welding, etc.
Lack of access to secondary education, trade schools and the University.
Lack of workspaces such as workshops or small warehouses.
Lack of a minimum of business fabric.
Lack of tools, technological resources and facilities for local entrepreneurship.
Lack of innovation and local entrepreneurship.

Through this call, we ask Alstom to participate in the financing of the CISEA, which will allow addressing both

Challenge 3: education and training of the rural community; as well as participating in the financing of part of the
cost that will also involve addressing Challenge 2: that of sustainable mobility in the community.

Proposed Solution
The solution is to empower and train the local community so that they have the skills to solve their own energy and
mobility challenges.

For this reason, from Light Humanity, we propose to support the Association of Ribereños to create the “ICESA”
(Innovation Center for Energy Sovereignty of the Amazon), where local entrepreneurs who wish to innovate in
sustainable mobility solutions are trained and accompanied and access to energy.

The ICESA will serve in the first place, to empower and train new local entrepreneurs such as Amiraldo and
Tatiana, so that they are able to provide sustainable solutions to the dependence on fossil fuels in mobility; and
second, to inspire and set an example for other rural Amazon communities to use CISEA's “open source” designs
and address their own mobility and energy challenges.

To achieve the proposed solution, the project is divided into two phases:

PHASE 1: CREATION OF THE CISEA AND FORMATION OF THE FIRST WORKING GROUP. (October 2021-January 2022)

To address the "Main Challenge" of the lack of education and training in the community, from Light Humanity and
the Association of Ribereños our objective is to create the first Innovation Center for Energy Sovereignty of the
Amazon, and train its members in the technologies capable of addressing mobility and energy access challenges.

Key activities to achieve this goal:

-> Review and concretion between Light Humanity and the Association of Ribereños the start-up strategy of the
CISEA.
-> Launch of information sessions on the CISEA, contact with people and entities interested in the project
-> Opening of the selection process for the first working group. We will select a group of between 3 and 6 people /
companies within the community with previous experience in boat building, electricity and welding. The goal is to
create a first working group that is capable of building the sustainable ships in Phase 2.
-> Carrying out theoretical training for the working group in the following areas:

Training in basic principles to create technological solutions that are capable of being carried out by the community
itself.
Training in the design of efficient hydrodynamic constructions with local materials
Theoretical training on transmission in pedal boats and electric motors
Theoretical training on oversizing of solar systems in mobility

To quantify the success of this training, the participants will be tested to test the skills acquired in this training

period.
-> Generation of the structure of the Online Platform in Notion, including uploading of test content to the platform
so that the user experience and usability of the platform can be tested.

PHASE 2: CONSTRUCTION OF 2 SUSTAINABLE BOATS. (January 2022-December 2022)

The previously formed working group will build a minimum of two sustainable and economical vessels. In order
for the design of the boats to be able to face the transportation challenges of the community mentioned previously,
Light Humanity together with the Association of Ribereños has established 3 principles with which the ICESA will
work when designing and executing the constructions of the boats:

Principle Number 1: Design and manufacture using local resources, entities and tools.

Principle Number 2: the energy source used has to be as local and renewable as possible, prioritizing energy
efficiency and simplicity of designs to make them more accessible.

Principle Number 3: Designs will be shared as "Open Source" for better dissemination and scalability of the project.

From the Light Humanity team and the Association of Ribereños, we have developed 2 ship designs that meet the 3
basic principles that will set the foundations for future ICESA designs. These designs will serve to show the initial
working group examples of ways to apply these principles when thinking about how to solve mobility problems and
access to energy.

The first sustainable boat design (Construction between January 2022 and May 2022) will be a pedal boat in the
shape of a catamaran made with locally worked materials, such as wood, aluminum and bicycle parts.
It will have a total of 6 pedals so that a maximum of 6 people can pedal and start the propulsion system using
horizontal blades. It will have a maximum capacity of 10 people and will serve to put into practice the theoretical
knowledge learned by the working group. (See details of the first design in the CISEA Project Presentation)

The second sustainable boat design (Construction between June 2022 and December 2022) is once again a
catamaran with pedal boats, but this time with a capacity of 25 people and with 10 pedal systems, and where a
system of 10 electric motors is also added to assist the pedaling of the passengers. This pedaling system is used in
conventional electric bicycles, which as a whole will allow a support of 5 kW of electric power (500W for each
motor). To deliver the necessary power to these systems, a 10 kW photovoltaic panel system will be placed on the
upper part of the boat, using a charge regulator capable of adapting the voltage of the solar system to that necessary
to run the engines. a small Lithium Iron Phosphate battery of 5 kWh at 48 Volts capable of stabilizing the voltage of
the entire electrical system, in addition to providing a minimum of 1 hour of boat operation when pedaling
propulsion is not available and there is not enough solar radiation. (See details of the second design in the CISEA
Project Presentation)

The boat can work as follows:
Only using the electric propulsion system to power the 10 500W motors. Reaching an approximate speed of 9 knots.
The electric propulsion system can work autonomously with solar energy, storing the surplus in the batteries to

6
Draft
have that energy when there is not enough solar radiation.

Only by using the pedaling energy, a person is capable of generating up to 200 W of power with their pedaling, with
which the boat will reach 6 knots if it has 2 kW of power, that is, 10 people pedaling.

Combining the pedaling propulsion system with the electrical system until reaching 7 kW. With this power, the boat
could reach 12 knots.

The fact of being able to do without the energy of the solar panels and the battery to operate the boat allows greater
autonomy and safety for the passengers, who will always be able to pedal to reach their destination. In any case, the
system of solar panels and batteries is dimensioned in such a way that even with adverse weather conditions the
boat has an autonomy of electric propulsion of at least 4 hours each day and up to 8 hours in favorable weather
conditions.

Under the leadership and capacity for innovation of the community, the solution will permanently guarantee access
to education for children living in the interior of the Amazon, avoiding their current school failure and paving the
way for new future generations.

With these first two vessels, the ICESA and its members intend to sow a seed that will lead to the emergence of new
sustainable ships that do not depend on fossil fuels, as we created by our ally Kara Solar in Ecuador. These are just
the first two designs, of many others that have to come from the ICESA itself, where in the long term dozens of
solutions will have to be developed to achieve energy sovereignty for rural communities in the Amazon. These
prototypes of sustainable mobility are the beginning of a long journey where also, in the future, new solutions are
explored that address the challenges of access to energy in homes and schools.

As part of this phase of construction of the ships we find the following main activities:

Generation of an adequate physical space with the necessary materials that will serve as a workshop for
entrepreneurs (December 2021 and January 2022)
Generation of a technical work manual and delivery together with tools to the work group. (December 2021 and
January 2022)

BOAT 1 (January to May 2022)

Conducting reviews for the improvement of the preliminary design of the first sustainable boat with the initial
working group.
Upload of the revised designs to the ICESA collaborative online platform.
Contribution of comments on the ICESA platform by Alstom volunteers and other professionals about the design of
the first sustainable boat and its possible improvements.
Integration of the possible improvements on the design provided in the platform and beginning of the construction
of the first sustainable boat.
Completion of the construction of the first sustainable boat (with a cost in materials and labor of less than € 8,300,
we will carry out a budget monitoring to see if we can achieve this economic objective, which will allow a boat of
these characteristics to reach be competitive in the EU market for boats).
Preparation of the report on the construction process and uploading it to the ICESA online platform. Comments
from Alstom professionals and other technicians on the results obtained.
Realization of days of rethinking and reflection with the participants of the construction of the first sustainable

boat, on the comments of improvement received.

BOAT 2 (May to December 2022)

Carrying out the same activities mentioned above for the first boat.
Visits by the promoter team to 3 other communities to communicate about the project and encourage its replication
(December 2022).
Making a video and photos of the implementation throughout the project.
Organization of two events to disseminate the results of the project in December 2022 (1 in Madrid and another in
the city of Breves).

GOVERNANCE, ADMINISTRATION AND ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY OF THE ICESA

The ICESA will be managed by the Association of Ribereños de Breves, which has open and democratic governance
structures, guaranteeing that any person or entity will be able to participate in the ICESA. Light Humanity will
support the Association until the CISEA project has the capacity to sustain itself economically and can continue with
the work of training and empowering local entrepreneurs.

The economic sustainability of the ICESA is expected to come within a period of no more than 3 years along any of
the following lines:

-> Consolidated shipbuilding companies in the Amazon will pay a membership fee to the Association to be part of
the ICESA, allowing them to have direct support and receive face-to-face technical training by ICESA members when
implementing sustainable mobility designs .
-> The ICESA finances the construction of a series of sustainable boats and puts them to function as school transport,
and in exchange the city council pays a monthly fee for having these school boats providing the public transport
service. This is relatively straightforward since the city council is already paying a large amount of money for the
purchase of fossil fuel, and they have an interest in being able to incorporate cheaper mobility solutions.

-> Other types of federal aid and subsidies and foreign organizations that seek to support innovation in sustainable
mobility for the Amazon.

COMMUNICATION AND DISCLOSURE

With the spirit of encouraging other communities in the Amazon to follow this path towards energy sovereignty,
part of the financing of this project will go to the communication and dissemination of mobility solutions and
energy access arising from the ICESA.

8
Draft
This activity will be carried out through an online platform that will be built between November and December
2022 using the interactive platform NOTION, which will allow us to make public and participatory the different
manuals of energy and mobility solutions that arise along the way. over the years of the ICESA. The first content of
the platform will be the design and construction processes of these first 2 sustainable vessels, we will upload the
information to the platform with updates every 15 days as we progress in the design and construction of the vessels.
This update and real-time detail of the project will allow people from all over the world to follow and help in that
process. This means that, as part of Alstom's shared volunteering, its employees have access to this platform and
can leave comments and technical proposals on the steps of the project during its development, helping the local
team to overcome challenges that will arise during construction. and start-up of the vessels. In this way we will
create new relationships and insights between the Brief Community technical group, the Light Humanity team and
Alstom employees.

On this platform, it will also encourage the creation of other Innovation Centers in Amazon communities, trying to
accompany other local groups by sharing information on the process of creating the ICESA in the Breves
community. These new Innovation Centers will have the possibility to also share their own energy and mobility
solutions, and receive feedback from the community around the ICESA, thus creating a space for decentralized but
coordinated innovation that guarantees energy sovereignty in the Amazon.

The ICESA aspires to become a reference space for the training and incubation of local enterprises related to
mobility and energy, where the community, schools and universities, local companies and local administration are
involved. We all seek to create that physical and virtual space where the tools, techniques, methodologies and
knowledge necessary to achieve the energy sovereignty of the Amazon can be found.
Feasibility of the Proposed Solution
HEALTH RISKS
There could be a risk of electric shock when handling and working with solar panels and batteries. To avoid this,
our action plan is to always work with systems with a voltage lower than or equal to 48V which, if electrocution
occurs, does not put people's health at risk.
Also, the entire installation will have output power limiters and short-circuit protections, thus avoiding possible
fires. In any case, we will include fire extinguishers in the sustainable boats to be used in case of fire.
There is a risk of a passenger falling into the water. We will have equipment of life jackets in order inside the boat
for this type of situation.

TECHNICAL RISKS

Risk of lightning strikes the solar system: In this case we work with a specific protection used in a solar system, so
that in the event that lightning strikes the system, this protection jumps, disconnecting the electronic equipment
and thus preventing it from being damaged. or start a fire.
Risk of water inside the equipment: In this case we opted to introduce the solar charge regulators in IP65 protection
boxes.
Breakage of the hull of the boat and its subsequent sinking: The plan to reduce this risk is to compartmentalize the
air bags inside the two hulls of the catamaran, making sure that they are watertight, that is, isolated from each
other, and that a break in a part of the hull does not affect its stability and remains afloat until it can be repaired.

SOCIOECONOMIC RISKS
There is a risk that we will not be able to motivate and incentivize local boat builders and other necessary

9
Draft
technicians to create that first initial working group to develop the first two sustainable boat designs. The plan to
minimize this risk is to have a budget to be able to grant scholarships to these local technicians. Within the
community dozens of local boat builders coexist, we hope that with the right economic incentives we will have
several candidates that we can select.
FINANCIAL RISKS
There is a risk that we will not be able to arouse the interest of organizations or companies when it comes to
obtaining the financing to start the project. The action plan to reduce this risk is, on the one hand, to keep the
budget as low as possible, and on the other, to have Light Humanity's own funds to have at least 50% of the project
budget available.

LOGISTICAL RISKS
That the photovoltaic and battery materials that we need to bring to the community have delays and the execution
of the project is delayed. The plan to reduce this risk is to start with the construction of the first boat design using
only the materials that can be found locally, and to order 6 months in advance the materials for the construction of
the second boat design to solve any type of delay.

Pre-conditions before the project can start

Are there any pre-conditions?

. Yes

Please explain
There are two preconditions before starting the project:

The first precondition is to be able to obtain the approval of the project by the board of directors of the Association
of Agro Extractivists of the Japatituba River.

This board of directors is expected to meet in September 2021 to approve the ICESA project, which has been
prepared together with the Association itself and its current president Amiraldo de Souza Santos. Amiraldo has
more than 10 years of leadership in the entity, and ensures that, having built the project jointly, there will be no
impediments when approving it by the board of directors.

The second precondition is to get 50% co-financing of the project by Light Humanity.
The total budget of the project is: € 96,140, 50% we hope to be able to achieve it through this call, and the remaining
50% will come from the funds that Light Humanity is able to obtain on its own. Of those € 48,070 needed by Light
Humanity, we have already managed to block a large part of the necessary resources to date, the other donors are
detailed in a later section within this same form.

Benefits resulting from the project

The main tangible results of the project and the improvements that these will produce in the community are
described below.
A. The main activities of phase 1 will lead to the creation and start-up of the ICESA, which will facilitate the
existence of an innovation center to incubate local entrepreneurship projects for mobility and energy solutions,
replicable to other parts of the Amazon. This will lead to:
- Increased opportunities and improved conditions for entrepreneurship and access to knowledge and technical
training on energy and sustainable mobility for the community of Breves and its entrepreneurs, and other regions
of the Amazon.

10
Draft
- As a derived consequence, in the medium-long term, improvements in the home economy, family health, access to
education for schoolchildren and greater protection of the Amazon environment.
Community entrepreneurs in the mobility and energy sector will benefit directly, specifically between 3 and 6
companies or entrepreneurs. Indirectly, it will be beneficial for the entire Breves community, for the public
administration, the natural environment and other communities of the Amazon, where the project can be
replicated thanks to open source.
Concrete results of phase 1 activities:
- An agreement between Light Humanity and the Association of Ribereños is approved and signed for the creation
of the CISEA between the months of October and November 2021.
o Quantitative measurement indicator: 1 agreement signed unanimously
- 2 information sessions on the ICESA are held, with the attendance of at least 25 members of the community
(including women) and 3 companies from the region between the months of November and December 2021.
o Quantitative measurement indicators: number of attendees (people and companies) and number of information
sessions held, number of women participating.
o Qualitative measurement indicators: degree of satisfaction and degree of interest of the attendees.
- At least one work group of between 3 and 6 community people / companies (trained for the construction of phase
2) is formed and consolidated in the month of December 2021.
o Quantitative measurement indicator: number of people or companies that make up the work group and have the
appropriate experience,
At least 1 agreement or collaboration with any entity (universities, technical schools in the region or other relevant
entities) is signed for their involvement during the project.
Quantitative measurement indicator: number of agreements or collaborations with technical schools and
universities in the region.
4 relevant theoretical trainings are given to the working group, increasing their knowledge in the subjects that will
be put into practice in phase 2, during the months of December 2021 and January 2022.
o Quantitative measurement indicator: number of trainings given, number of attendees to the trainings.
o Qualitative measurement indicators: degree of acquisition of the knowledge imparted and degree of satisfaction
with the training.

The structure of the Online Platform in Notion is built, having uploaded test content to test the user experience and
usability of the platform.
o Qualitative measurement indicators: degree of usability of the platform and satisfaction of the user who tests
B. The main activities of phase 2 will lead to the construction of two sustainable and economical boats for the
community under the 3 established principles, which will allow the improvement of the transportation of the
community of Breves, and especially of the students of the Santa Izabel School , influencing the lack of access to
education due to a mobility issue.
 This will lead to:
- Improvement in entrepreneurship capacity in the design of sustainable mobility solutions
- Increase in regular school attendance and especially in the last days of the month.
- As a derived consequence, in the medium-long term, a decrease in frustration on the part of the teaching staff, a
positive impact in the long term on the rate of school failure and premature dropout in the Santa Izabel school and
the Breves educational community.
The participating entrepreneurs of the mobility and energy sector community (specifically between 3 and 6
companies or entrepreneurs), the users of these boats (among them and especially at least 50 students from the
Santa Izabel school) will benefit directly. ), the Association of Ribereños, as well as the public administration of

11
Draft
Breves as it will reduce costs and improve its reputation. Likewise, we believe that the ALSTOM volunteers
involved, who will have a more global vision of these rural areas of their country, will feel integrated as part of the
solution by providing technical proposals on the digital platform.

Indirectly, it will be beneficial for the entire community of Breves, for other areas of public administration, the
natural environment (less pollution of rivers, air and noise pollution), other schools in the area and other
communities in the Amazon (at least the 3 nearby communities to which information and training will be given
using the tools of the online platform), where the project can be replicated thanks to open source. In addition, it will
generate hope in the community and an inertia to continue building these boats towards sustainable mobility that
replaces diesel boats (reducing costs and associated pollution).
Concrete results of phase 2 activities:
- A physical workspace with the necessary materials and technical support is set up and is available to
entrepreneurs since February 2022.
o Qualitative measurement indicator: quality and availability of space and materials of the ICESA for the correct
development and construction of ships by entrepreneurs

- 1 work manual with its respective materials and basic tools (including information on the prototypes of the 2
ships) is provided to the entrepreneurs in February 2002.
o Quantitative measurement indicators: number of manuals generated and delivered, number of tools and
materials delivered

- At least 3 experts in mobility, solar energy, welding, electricity, product design and other techniques carry out
weekly supervision and accompaniment to entrepreneurs and builders throughout the months of creation of the
boats (January to December 2022).
o Quantitative measurement indicators: number of meetings between entrepreneurs and expert supervisors,
number of prototypes and ideas and designs generated.
o Qualitative measurement indicators: degree of satisfaction of the users of the accompaniment, degree of
innovation and viability of the prototypes / ideas generated.

- At least 1 sustainable boat type pedalo in the form of a catamaran made with local materials and that complies
with the 3 basic principles (with 10 seats and 6 pedaling), is built by the work group of entrepreneurs, accompanied
by their technical trainers, during the months of January and May 2022.
o Quantitative measurement indicators: number of boats built, number of places on the boat
o Qualitative measurement indicators: degree of technical and economic efficiency of the ship, degree of

Strategic Framework
Light Humanity's vision is a world where communities generate and manage the production of their own
energy based on renewable and local sources.

This is why our mission is to support rural communities in solutions that guarantee access to energy and efficient
clean mobility and in the hands of the community.

Our plan is to continue working with rural and marginal communities within Spain and Brazil, in order to provide
them with the tools, expertise and knowledge to achieve their energy sovereignty.
Experience / previous achievements
Background: in 2018 the social company Light Humanity was born, with the aim of designing solar energy solutions
to guarantee access to solar energy in areas that depend on fossil fuels. That same year, Amiraldo de Souza and
Tatiana de Souza, representatives of the Association of Ribereños en Breves (Pará, Brazil) are selected by Light
Humanity to carry out a local undertaking called “Light Amazonas” with the aim of giving access to Lamps Solar in
riverside homes and thus eliminate the use of kerosene lamps for lighting.

Since then, Light Amazonas, managed by the Association of Ribereños del Río Japatituba, has been able to bring

14
Draft
solar energy to more than 1,100 homes in the municipality of Breves, generating a great positive impact on both the
local economy and the health of the inhabitants of the rural areas of Breves.

During this time, we have been able to detect another great energy challenge in the community: access to
sustainable mobility. Currently, rural communities in the Amazon depend on diesel to power their boats. The high
cost of fossil fuel means that, for example, the school transport service is not able to buy the fuel to take students to
school during all school days of the month, generating great frustration among students and teachers, and causing a
high rate of school failure.

From Light Humanity we have worked in Spain on mobility projects where the energy source of land vehicles was
solar (https://www.zunpowertech.com/), with this experience we feel even more capable of being able to support
the Ribereña Association, seeking to repeat the success of "Light Amazonas" managed by the Association itself and
which has managed to bring light to thousands of people. (See images of the solar vehicles built by Light Humanity
at this link:
https://www.notion.so/lighthumanity/Zun-Power-y-Light-Humanity-3aee002936a74a78b4776356146ec4f8

In the last two years, we have been able to consolidate the Solar Lamps project, and we want to continue supporting
the Association of Ribereños to continue with their training and also be able to solve the mobility challenges faced
by these rural communities in the Amazon . And we want to face this challenge of sustainable and economic
mobility in school transport through the present project that we present to Alstom.

Projects in Spain:

Cañada Solar: This project works to achieve energy sovereignty in areas without electricity supply such as the
Madrid slum La Cañada Real, where there is a serious social emergency situation, being our mission to guarantee
that all families affected by this situation can have the opportunity to have a solar system that allows them to cover
their basic needs, and that is also safe, sustainable, reliable and accessible for the neighborhood. We have had to
design an innovative action plan so that it is adaptable to the different realities and capacities of these families. To
do this, we have modified the designs of our solar kits using reused materials, lowering costs, so that these families
are able to pay the cost of a solar system month after month with small monthly installments, thereby meeting the
basic needs of these families.
Energy communities in Spain: We promote collective solar self-consumption in neighborhoods, schools, universities
or companies. We currently have a collaboration agreement with the Fuhem Ecosocial Foundation to install 3 self-
consumption in 3 of its schools in Madrid.

Other ongoing projects in collaboration with other entities:
Light Mozambique: We work with the association FASFI and Azada Verde to bring light to families in rural areas in
Mozambique.
Light Madagascar: In collaboration with Agua de coco we bring light to homes in Madagascar, under a school
incentive program.
Light Ecuador: Together with the ALDEA Association and J3M we bring light to Ecuadorian families living in
poverty.

Roles of each partner in the project

Resourcing the project

Light Humanity will be the promotor of the project, lead by Eugenio García-Caldéron and Arturo Rubio Pomar

The Association (ASSOCIAÇÃO DOS TRABALHADORES AGROEXTRATIVISTA DO RIO JUPATITUBA)

will be the local leader and coordinator of the project lead by Amiraldo de Souza Santos and Tatiana de Souza
Santos

Both teams will have an on-site presence during the project

Co-financing of the project
The total budget of the project is: € 96,140, 50% we hope to be able to achieve it through this call, and the remaining
50% will come from the funds that Light Humanity is able to obtain on its own. Of those € 48,070 required by Light
Humanity, we have already managed to block a large part of the necessary resources to date:
-> Ramón Bilbao, a wine company in Spain, has committed to allocate € 10,000 to support this ICESA project.
-> Zun Power Technologies, a sustainable mobility company we work with in Spain, has committed to support Light
Humanity with € 15,000 to promote this ICESA project.
-> Light Humanity itself has reserved an item of € 10,000 to allocate to this project derived from the surpluses of the
2021 activity, and another € 5,000 in hours of work by the Light Humanity team.
-> The Light Amazonas project itself in Brazil, which is the competence of the Ribereños Association, undertakes to
contribute € 3,000 to the project. More hours of work in kind during the first year that add up to another € 5,000.
In this way we have managed to secure this item of 50% of the total budget of the project, this has been possible
because we have worked and communicated this project since March 2020, in order to reach this call with much of
the road traveled.

Is there already a donor (Co-financer) in place?

. No

Access to Mobility

17
Draft
Established relationships
The promoter, Camila, does not have a direct relationship with the partner of the project but was highly
interested from the moment that learnt about the project through Anne Cecile.

Proximity
A group of Alstom volunteers is invited to the Japatituba river community to participate in person in some of
the design and construction activities of sustainable boatsAlstom employees will have access to the online
platform of the ICESA so they can access the latest updates for the design of sustainable Boats and they will
be able to send both technical and strategy comments. Furthermore, the follow up and relationship with the
project promoter will be through emails and online video conferences.Alstom employees are also invited to
the project results dissemination sessions that will take place in December 2022 in both Breves, Brazil, and
Madrid, Spain.

Sustainability
The ICESA will be managed by the Association of Ribereños de Breves, which has open and democratic governance
structures, guaranteeing that any person or entity will be able to participate in the ICESA. Light Humanity will
support the Association for the time necessary until the ICESA project has the capacity to sustain itself economically
and can continue with the work of training and empowering local entrepreneurs.

-> The ICESA finances the construction of a series of sustainable boats and puts them to function as school transport,
and in exchange the city council pays a monthly fee for having these school boats providing the public transport
service. This is relatively simple since the city council would stop buying fuel on those routes where these
sustainable ships operate.

-> Other types of federal aid and subsidies and foreign organizations that seek to support innovation in sustainable
mobility for the Amazon.

Beneficiaries
They will benefit directly:

- the participating entrepreneurs of the community in the mobility and energy sector (specifically between 3 and 6
companies or entrepreneurs)
the users of these boats (among them and especially at least 50 students from the Santa Izabel school)
-  the Association of Ribereños
-  Breves Municipality public administration will reduce costs and improve your reputation.

Likewise, we consider that the ALSTOM volunteers involved, who will have a more global vision of these rural areas
of their country and will feel integrated as part of the solution by providing technical proposals on the digital

18
Draft
platform.
Indirectly, it will be beneficial for:
 - the entire community of Breves and other public administration institutions
- the natural environment (less pollution of rivers, air and noise pollution)
- other schools in the area and other communities in the Amazon (at least the 3 nearby communities that will
receive information and training using the tools of the online platform), where the project can be replicated thanks
to open source.

In addition, it will generate hope in the community and an inertia to continue building these boats towards
sustainable mobility that replaces diesel boats (reducing costs and associated pollution).

Additional information

Are there possibilities for local Alstom employees to provide volunteer support to the project?

. Yes

23
Draft
What role would they have?
Yes, there are two ways through which we would like to involve the Brazil ALSTOM employees in our project
through voluntary support. Firstly, as mentioned in the question related to the solutions, the platform in
NOTION to manage the ICESA project would be open to technical proposals of ALSTOM employees. We would
like to organize a webinar to inform their employees about our project and to open it for their technical
proposals for the design and construction processes of the sustainable vessels. We could have their
comments based on their expertise to overcome the technical challenges we might find during the process of
construction of the vessels. This could be the seed for a future and scalable relation with ALSTOM employees.
Secondly, we would like to open the opportunity of certain employees more implicated during the online
platform discussions to come and visit the project in the Amazonas and participate in the construction of the
vessels together with the entrepreneurs and local community.

Is there anything else you wish to say about your project?

Thank you very much to the Alstom Foundation for the opportunity to promote sustainable mobility in our
community.
