The first function of libraries was to select, collect, and preserve information. Library

Styles/Levels of Reference Services
In one of the early textbooks on reference service, James Wyer described three different
philosophies of reference service, which he labeled “conservative,” “moderate,” and “liberal.”
In his landmark history of reference service, Samuel Rothstein calls these same philosophies
“minimum,” “middling,” and “maximum.”
