1. A 400 V, 3-phase mesh connected synchronous motor runs at rated voltage with an excitation
emf of 510V. its synchronous impedance per phase is 0.5+j4 Ω and friction , windage and iron
losses are 900W. calculate the shaft power (or net) output, line current, pf and efficiency for
(a) maximum power output and (b) maximum power input.
2. A 6.6 kV star connected 3-phase synchronous motor works at constant voltage and excitation.
Its synchronous impedance is 1.5+j12 Ω per phase. When the input power is 1000 kW, the pf
is 0.8 leading. Find the pf when input is increased to 1500 kW.
3. A 400 V,3phase star connected synchronous motor with Xd=6 Ω and Xq=4 Ω is running in
parallel with an infinite bus. If its field current is reduced to zero, find the maximum load that
can be put on the synchronous motor. Also the armature current and power factor at the
maximum power. Neglect armature resistance.
4. A 3 phase synchronous generator is delivering a power of 0.9 pu to an infinite bus at rated
voltage and at pf 0.8 lagging. The generator has Xd=1 pu and Xq=0.6 pu. Determine the load
angle and the excitation voltage.
5. A 20 MVA, 3-phase star connected 11kV, 12 pole, 50 Hz salient pole synchronous motor, with
negligible armature resistance, has reactance’s of Xd=5 Ω and Xq=3 Ω. At full load, unity power
factor and rated voltage, compute
a)the excitation voltage.
b)power
c)synchronising power per electrical degree and the corresponding torque.
d)synchronising power per mechanical degree and the corresponding torque.
e)maximum value of power angle δ and the corresponding power.
