Tell me, how many kinds of food do you know?

Fruits? Vegetables? Bread? Oh, there are many!

Do you know why we eat food?


Yes, to get energy to work and play . Otherwise, we’ll feel tired
and hungry.

Yes, that’s right! We also need food to help us grow and be


healthy.

Let me tell you about different kind of foods.

We can divide food in five types.

Food is an important need of human life. For a healthy living, we


should have a healthy and balanced diet. A healthy and balanced
diet is a kind of diet that contains the right amount of all the
food groups.

Why do we need to consider Food Pyramid in preparing meals?

Our body needs lots of different nutrients to stay healthy. That


means eating a variety of foods from each of the main food
groups.

1st picture – I can see bread in the first one. These are made of
cereals, these contain carbohydrates.
2nd picture – In second, it is butter. These are fats.
3rd picture – Now comes fish and milk. These contain proteins.
4th picture – Here are fruits!
Mommy always wants me to eat these!
Yes, these contain vitamins and minerals.

Now, let us understand what these different foods do to our body.

Like car needs petrol to run, our body also needs energy to work.
This energy comes from carbohydrates. They also give us instant
energy.
Fats also gives energy but very slowly. Body keeps them in store
and if you don’t give carbohydrates on time, body uses them. But
if you don’t use the stored energy, you can become very fat. So,
you should eat less of this.

Here are proteins, this will help you to grow. Body keeps
building new cells, these proteins help build and repair cells.

Why does a person look sick? There are few nutrients which keep
our body healthy and they fight diseases. These are called
vitamins and minerals.

This is water. This is very important. You know, half of our


weight is water in our body. It helps to keep our body clean and
helps in digesting our food.

The Food Pyramid is designed to make healthy eating easier. It


shows the different food groups and how much of each we need to
have a healthy diet.
