Madras Regiment

Formation of the Regiment


 August 1758 – Roots of the regiment were formed under the East India Company, and
formed as ‘Madras European Regiment’
 Post-Independence – The smaller units of Travancore, Cochin and Mysore were integrated in
the Madras Regiment

Wars
 1947 Jammu Kashmir conflicts
Battle of Barapind: 4-16 December 1947
It was one of the most crucial battles fought in the Jammu-Punjab region.
3 Infantry Divisions and 2 Armored Brigades
The Madras Regiment played a crucial role in the victory securing the Jammu-Punjab Region
for India
 Sino-Indian War 1962
Deployed along with the Punjab Regiment at the disputed border, the regiment won many
honors facing many difficulties

 Indo-Pak War 1965


3 Madras was given the responsibility to capture Maharajke village which was part of the
larger game plan – Operation Riddle. The village was 2.5 km inside Pak territory, the
assault began with open fire with artillery, medium machine gun and rifles from the
enemy. Despite the effective fire, the Army relentlessly kept up the pace of assault and
with remarkable courage captured Maharajke within one day.

 Indo-Pak War 1971


Assigned to press home an attack on Siramani in East Pakistan, a fortified military base of
Pakistan the gallant ‘Thambis’, despite strong enemy resistance succeeded in capturing the
post through sheer exhibition of courageousness and professionalism. They won multiple
battle honors for this display of gallantry and bravery
 Kargil War 1999
Served on the world’s highest battlefield, an achievement achieved by none other in the
world
