Reading Comprehension
Patterns of organization
• Chronological patterns
• Sequential patterns
• Listing patterns
• Spatial patterns
In the real world, many The different Patterns of Organization
texts contain sections connect supporting details in paragraphs,
essays, or chapters, among others
and passages that
combine two or more
patterns of organization.

This week we will study (Chronologic

some important
Patterns of
Organization.
Chronological patterns or
Time order:
Words that order information chronologically
following a progression in time

Timeline in a narrative or key words

like…
after, afterward, as soon as, at last,
at that time, before, during,
eventually, finally, first,
second, following, formerly,
immediately, in/on (date), last, later,
next, now, meanwhile,
shortly, since, then, until, when
Sequencial Patterns:
It is similar to the chronological pattern but
more specific because it describes a series
of consecutive steps. It is also used to
provide instructions or describing process.

also, and, another, a number of, as
well as, too, besides, first, for
example, for instance, furthermore,
in addition, in fact, largest, least,
moreover, most important, one, plus,
second, several, the following
Listing Patterns:
Items that are listed randomly. Changing
the order of the elements does not affect
the meaning of the paragraph.

first, second, third, another, also,
too,
finally, several, numerals
Note about Simple listing and time order.
These P.O.O. (Patterns of
organization) are frequently
confused:
They are the same except for
one factor: order.
For the simple listing type, order
is not that important in most of
the cases.
For Chronological order, respect
the order is very important.
The sequence patterns explain
specific steps.
Spatial Order Patterns:
When we talk about spatial order, we talk about physical
location or position in space. Details support the main
idea as a list that reveals where items are located.

It describes a subject according to a

specific position or uses words such as…
top to bottom, near to far, room to room,
inside to outside, above, adjacent to,
away, below, behind, beside, between,
beyond, close by, elsewhere, in front of,
inside, nearby, next to, opposite, outside,
over, toward, under, within, without
Let’s Review!
Awareness of patterns of
organization supports reading
comprehension because identifying
the organization and the supporting
details helps you understand the
logic, order and intention of the
ideas in a text.
Let’s practice!

which demonstrates the work done to stakeholders to
elicit feedback, and sprint retrospective which enables
the team to reflect and improve.
