All about Antonio Pigaffeta

Antonio Pigaffeta is known to be an Italian scholar and explorer. He served as


Ferdinand Magellan’s subordinate. He is a Venetian, a people from Venice, Italy, in
his 20s, he was destined to be part of the expedition led by Magellan that arrives in
the Philippines on March 17, 1521. He came from a wealthy family and studied
navigation, he also studied astronomy, geography, and cartography in his youth. He
was born in 1491, and the Magellan expedition made him around 30 years old, he
died in the year 1531-1534 age 40-50 years old. During the 16th century, he assisted
on the board ships of the Knights of Rhodes. He also finished to books including:
Relazione del primo viaggio intorno al mondo (1524-1525), Regole sull'arte del
navigare (1524-1525). We all know him because of his book, the first voyage around
the world(1519-1522), the reason why he wrote this is because he is awakened by
Magellan’s expedition, and is committed to traveling and know about the world.
Pigaffeta joined the expedition being the diarist of Ferdinand Magellan. He joined this
expedition to the spice islands and this expedition was said to be the first to
circumnavigate the world and featured the death of Magellan in the battle against
Lapu-Lapu and his troops happened at Mactan. Pigaffeta serves as the eyewitness for
that event. During their voyage, Pigaffeta had his journal which can be the source of
Magellan's other information. In his journal, he describes the traditions of the early
Filipinos making use of coconuts and fondling about the Philippines having rich and
full of gold.

To simplify, Pigaffeta himself is important to the expedition led by Magellan


because he is the person behind the story of Magellan and his voyage kept in his
journal and books. He is important not only because he made the source for the
expedition, information about Magellans and other travelers but he contributed to
Philippine History which he describe the Filipinos during those times, the way how
they maximize resources, also the language they have, their tradition and culture, and
how rich the Philippines is.
