Journal Entry # 1:

Write your own personal resolve to fear God as your individual decision. How much reverent, honoring,
and loving fear of God is the best way to transform you to be a good, prudent, and wise Filipino citizen.
Remember the two kinds of fear that enforced obedience; fear because you are afraid to be physically
beaten, and fear that results in obedience because you love the person so much that you don’t want to
offend him/her.
“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
– Mark 9:23

First of all, we must recognize that God is loving, merciful, forgiving, and righteous. Knowing
God and understanding His character means accepting the fact that His justice and holiness, purity,
perfection, completeness of character and separation from evil cause Him to judge sin. In this sense,
fearing the Lord is to appreciate His character.
Fearing the Lord means to be in reverent awe of His holiness, to give Him complete reverence and
to honor Him as the God of great glory because of His great power. True fear of the Lord causes believers
to place their faith and trust in Him alone for salvation. Finally, to fear God involves recognizing that He
is angry about sin and has the power to punish those who stand arrogantly against Him and break His
laws
The reasons for fearing God are found in the different meanings of the “fear of the Lord,” as
described above. Although there are different types of fear, part of our respect and awe is in the
knowledge of his wrath and power. It’s all connected. The continual blessings we receive from God,
especially the forgiveness of our sins. Above all, the fact that the Lord is a God of justice who will judge
the entire human race should be reason enough to produce a godly fear.

Journal Entry # 2:
Write a reflection of this contrasting view of the medieval concept of humanism with today’s view of
humanism.

Humanism in large measure established the climate and provided the medium for the rise of
modern thought. Humanism focused on human thinking and logic. They were against faith, tradition, and
devotion. The Middle Ages was based of religion. Humanism focused on human thinking and logic. An
appreciation of the art, literature, music and crafts that are our heritage from the past and of the creativity
that if nourished can continuously enrich our lives
A joyous alternative to religions that believe in a supernatural god and life. Humanists believe
that this is the only life of which we have certain knowledge and that we owe it to ourselves and others to
make it the best life possible for ourselves. A belief that when people are free to think for themselves,
using reason and knowledge as their tools, they are best able to solve this world’s problems. Humanism is
a philosophy of those in love with life. Humanists take responsibility for their own lives and relish the
adventure of being part of new discoveries, seeking new knowledge, exploring new options. Humanists
enjoy the open-endedness of a quest and the freedom of discovery.
An impressive variety of major developments in literature, philosophy, art, religion, social
science, and even natural science had their basis in humanism or were significantly nourished by it. More
generally, the so-called modern awareness that sense of alienation and freedom applied both to the
individual and to the human race derives ultimately, for better or worse, from humanistic sources. But
with humanism, as with every other historical subject, one should beware, lest valid concern about
changes, crises, sources, and influences obscure the even more important issues of human continuity and
human value. Whatever its weaknesses and inner conflicts, the humanistic movement was heroic in its
breadth and energy, remarkable in its aspirations. Its moral program formed the basis for lives that are
remembered with admiration.

Journal Entry # 3:
Write a reflection on the contrast between Nationalism and Patriotism
Historically, both patriotism and nationalism were used roughly in the same way. But they
significantly diverged along the way, and one has a much more positive connotation than the other. Do
you know which is which? Nationalism and Patriotism are sometimes considered synonyms since they
both indicate feelings of love for one’s homeland. But what we should know all about their
characteristics, and key differences?
The word patriotism means “devoted love, support, and defense of one’s country; national
loyalty.”
The term often brings to mind people directly involved with the defense of a nation, namely military
service members as well as state and local government representatives. For example: The soldiers showed
exemplary patriotism defending their country from attack. Patriotism, however, can take many other
forms outside serving in the military and public office. Diplomats, teachers, first responders, and so many
more all exemplify patriotism in the many forms of good they do in service of their communities. There
are millions of government employees, as well as millions who volunteer their time in the interest of their
country are also examples of patriotism. In most contexts today, nationalism is “the policy or doctrine of
asserting the interests of one’s own nation viewed as separate from the interests of other nations or the
common interests of all nations.” In short, nationalism is a kind of excessive, aggressive patriotism. This
form of nationalism is what happens when patriotism gets out of hand and morphs into something more
exclusionary, isolationist, It can also result in isolationism, or “the policy or doctrine of isolating one’s
country from the affairs of other nations by declining to enter into alliances, foreign economic
commitments, international agreement.”

Patriotism generally has a positive connotation. It’s used for various positive sentiments, attitudes,
and actions involving loving one’s country and serving the great good of all its people. While Nationalism
generally has a negative connotation. It’s used for political ideologies and movements that a more
extreme and exclusionary love of one’s country at the expense of foreigners, immigrants, and even people
in a country who aren’t believed to belong in some way, often racial and religious grounds.

Journal Entry # 4:
Write a reflection on your determination to pursue personal ways to honor and respect your
environment.

Good awareness helps our generations to keep the eyes open of our environment. We, as the
young generations are too young to deal with the nature, but we still have right to manage it. The
younger generations inherit the world as we have the responsibility to take care of this planet.
The Earth comes as the most important shelter for us and incoming generations in the future. I am glad
to emphasize that selfish is not our general attitude.

Being environmentally friendly simply means having a lifestyle that is better for the


environment. It’s just taking small steps towards looking after the mother earth to make this planet a
better place for our communities and generations to come. It means that we have only one wonderful
world and we share it together for years. We should recognize the value of being kind. Sorrowfully I say,
where I come from, people do not generally appreciate nature which is so sad. Although some community
never interfere the nature, I still solute the progressive countries. We should think for some strategies to
ensure the nature is in a good condition. For example, we should plant more green plants to give us more
oxygen. Nowadays, the younger generations facing modern technology addiction which seems to be
doing more harm than good to themselves and the environment. Too much development has lead to
pollution and destruction of the nature. As a result, the temperature of the Earth’s surface rises. This
effect is called the greenhouse effect. The increase in temperature will result in changes in climate.

The Earth sacrifices many things for us. Don’t we realize that? Yes, we never appreciate it.
Therefore, today I would like to encourage my friends to be kind to our nature. It will be easy if we want.
Lastly, I would like to remind my friends and even myself for always remember that we only have one
world that will be inherit by one generation to another. So, be respect nature and live in harmony with it.
