c) SYNOPSIS AS WELL AS THE ELEMENTS.

SYNOPSIS:
The movie is a sweeping romance set in the Caspian Sea region around the time of World War I, about an
upper-class Muslim man and a beautiful Georgian princess who is Christian but they love each other and
marry young despite the reluctance of their parents. There are problems - of course! When Ali takes his bride
to spend several months in Persia, she is appalled to realize how her freedom is being curbed. While living in
luxury she is shocked to be sequestered in a harem and put through the humiliation of being treated like an
Eastern bride by the housekeeper who is a eunuch. Nino has been used to living very freely as a modern young
Western woman, so the clash between East and West and between the traditional Moslem life and the
twentieth century independence of her upbringing is very marked. Then the Great War breaks out, and things
get worse.

Ali Khan Shirvanshir and Nino Kipiani have been in love for a long time. He is a Muslim and descends
from a prominent Azerbaijani family. The girl here was the daughter of a prominent Georgian family, and the
Russian authorities have granted her the title of "Princess." She is a devout Christian with a European cultural
background.
In 1914, Russia declares war, some of Ali's Muslim companions gladly join the Russian army, but he
believes it is a Christian conflict. That's why Ali's father permits him to marry Nino. To escape the revenge of
Nacharyan's family, Ali hides in a mountain village in Dagestan. That's why the place of Baku becomes
surrounded by an irregular Russian army seeking loot. The war has ended, and the British troops are going to
be withdrawn. The Russians are pressing again.
Ali joins the defenders; Nino refuses to take shelter, and aids behind the front line. To escape the
revenge of Nacharyan's family, Ali hides in a mountain village in Dagestan. After a time, Nino joins him; they
still love each other. They are married and live in blissful poverty.

Conflict:
Man Vs. Society

Theme/s:
Major themes: Marriage, Religion
Minor themes:War, Politics, Wealth, Power, Royalty
The theme of this strory, is a serious discussion about the differences in attitude and philosophy
between the East and the West, between Christianity and Islam, between two young people of different
religions. An interesting love tale between a modern Azerbaijani boy and a Christian Georgian princess, and
the difficulties they have in coming together and staying together despite great differences in their upbringing
and perspectives on life. The entire event is a representation for the clash of two cultures, as well as the
Caucasus' inability to find a way to live in peace together.
