Q1. Let f (x, y) = [x2 + xy, x2 − y 2 ]. Prove directly, from the definition of the derivative,
that Df(1,2) (x, y) = [4x + y, −2x + 4y]

Q2. For each of the functions f (x, y, z) = [3x2 − 3y, x + 3y + z] and g(x, y) = [−xy, x2 −
y, 3x, x + y 2 ] and point p = (−1, 0, 1), below, verify the chain rule by completing the
following steps.

(a) Calculate Jg(f (p)), Jf (p), and the product Jg(f (p))Jf (p).
(b) Calculate (g ◦ f )(p).
(c) Calculate J(g ◦ f )(p) and verify that it equals Jg(f (p))Jf (p).
(d) Calculate Dgf (p) , Dfp , D(g ◦f )p , andDgf (p) ◦Dfp . Show the calculation of Dgf (p) ◦
Dfp even though it is implied by the corresponding result for the Jacobian ma-
trices.

Q3. Define
xy(x2 −y 2 )
(
x2 +y 2
if (x, y) 6= (0, 0);
f (x, y) =
0 if (x, y) = (0, 0)

(a) Show that f, ∂f

∂x
, and ∂f
∂y
are continuous on R2 .
∂2f ∂2f
(b) Show that ∂x∂y
and ∂y∂x
exist on R2 and are continuous on R2 r {(0, 0)}.
∂2f ∂2f
(c) Show that ∂x∂y
