Matrix organisational structure
An organizational structure matrix combines two or more different organizational
structure types. It is a method of setting up your company so that reporting linkages are
put up as a grid or matrix rather than in the conventional hierarchy .Employees in this
organization often report to both the project manager and their functional manager,
respectively. Commonly, one reporting line will be given precedence over another (eg
staff may have to report to their functional manager before reporting to the project
manager).

Illustrations of matrix structures

There are various types of matrix structures. Depending on the project manager's level of
authority, these can be divided into three primary categories:
1. The functional manager, who controls the people and resources, retains the
majority of the power in a functional or weak matrix. The project manager
typically performs administrative or coordinating duties and has a minor
responsibility.

2. Strong power structure: The project manager is in charge of staff management,

budget control, and the majority of decision-making. The functional manager's
responsibilities are restricted
.
3. The functional managers and the project managers share control and authority
over the employees and the budget in a balanced matrix.

All of these matrix structure types can be utilized in huge organizations at various levels
of a company. This is referred to as a "composite organization" at times.

Due to its ability to cut down on the lead time required to develop a new product, the
matrix structure can also assist organizations in quickly adapting to changing client
needs. The best candidates for this structure are companies that operate in fast-paced
environments.

A matrix organizational structure's drawbacks;

For companies operating in a more established setting with predetermined client

requirements, a matrix structure may not be the best option. Due to its intricacy and the
requirement that workers report to two supervisors, it may result in:

 confusion regarding roles, responsibilities and priorities

 divided loyalties between project teams

 blurred lines of accountability

 difficulties in coordinating tasks or functions

 power struggle between the project manager and the functional manager

 large overhead costs, on account of having multiple managers
