DISCOURSE
E6 RANKSCALE

ACT- It can be created using grammatical units such as words,

groups, clauses or sentences. An Act can be informative, eliciting
or directing. Therefore, there are three types of Act. These are
informative, elicitation and directive.

MOVE- It consists of acts and combines to form exchanges. There are five
classes of moves, which make up exchanges. They are framing moves,
focusing moves, opening, answering, and follow-up.

EXCHANGE- It is formed by a set of moves. It involves a situation where

discourse participants engage in series of moves. An exchange can consist of a
question, an answer, a comment or more, depending on the given situation.

TRANSACTION- It is made up of the exchanges and it is also called a set of exchanges.

It serves as boundary makers marking out openings and closings in conversation.

LESSON- It is made of many transactions. It is also can be called as a set of exchanges.

Wrap up:

The discourse rank scale shows and allows the discourse to be examined in
layers. Discourse patterns can be identified at the small-scale level of the individual
acts, and the larger-scale level of exchanges. The top of the rank scale is labeled as
lesson, followed by transaction, then exchange, move, and act. The usefulness of this
model is that teachers can utilize it as a tool to develop and understand spoken
discourse between students and teachers in the classroom.
