Although software programs are now available to translate languages, there are still many advantages

to learning foreign languages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In the eyes of some, despite the availability of translation applications, mastering a foreign language is
still very beneficial. This essay manifests my agreement for the statements, thereby citing the merits of
language acquisition cultural imbibing and improved cognitive health.

The key benefit of learning a new language is cultural understanding, followed by a better relationship
between locals and foreigners. Language mastering is a great way to gain deeper insight into alien
cultures.

Due to cultural differences, almost all cultures in the world have certain expression that cannot be
translated into other languages. For example, in American English, the expression “read my lips”,
meaning “listen carefully”, derives from the fact that Americans have the habit of minimizing their
mouth movements when speaking. Therefore, those relying on translation programs might fall to grasp
the true meaning of the phrase because of he fact that it is non-existent in their languages.

Given the inextricable connection between language and culture, allocating the time on learning new
languages could help them build strong bonds with the locals. This is because most native speakers
appreciate the fact that foreigners actually strive to imbibe their languages and culture instead of
depending on translation software to strike up an awkward conversation.

Also, acquiring a new language gives your brain remarkable advantages. First, language acquisition helps
learners significantly develop cognitive and intellectual functions. Since bilinguals and polyglots have
constantly switch languages when speaking, this would give their brains some sort of exercise and
render the brains more plastic. In the long term, this could potentially enhance language learners’
agility, helping them improve problem solving and multitasking skills .

It is also important to note that this activity could delay the onset of serious old-age diseases. As
mentioned above, the frequent switching between languages offer learners constant brain training.
Scientifically, this activity could strengthen their memory capacity and help them eschew serious
diseases related to aging such as dementia or Alzheimer.

In conclusion, although we can get access to programs that can translate languages reasonably
accurately, we can reap a wide range of benefits from learning a new language.
