1 Introduction
1.1 Overview
1.1.1 Handheld Monitoring System
The Handheld Monitoring System consists of the following components:
• Paging transmitter that converts Ethernet data messages,
generated by the server computer, into the POCSAG paging
format, and transmits this radio signal to the handheld units.
• Handheld monitors

1.1.2 Carry on Board System


The Carry on Board (COB) system consists of the following components:
• A serial transmitter that converts RS232 data messages,
generated by the server computer, into a radio signal to be sent
to the COB unit.
• COB unit consisting of:
o Waterproof case
o Laptop computer
o USB paging receiver

1.2 Frequency
1.2.1 Pager Frequencies
Pager frequencies must be in one of the following bands:
• VHF: 148 – 155 MHz
• VHF: 155 – 160 MHz
• VHF: 160 – 165 MHz
• VHF: 165 – 170 MHz
• VHF: 170 – 174 MHz
• UHF: 440 – 450MHz
• UHF: 450 – 470MHz

1.2.2 COB Frequencies


COB Laptop frequencies must be in one of the following bands:
• UHF: 403-420MHz
• UHF: 420-450MHz
• UHF: 450-470MHz

It is the client’s responsibility to apply for frequency/s with the appropriate local
authority.

Note: If the frequency/s or sub – band can be confirmed, equipment can be


ordered earlier.

2 Handheld Monitors
2.1 Description
The wireless handheld unit may be used for docking, load monitoring and
environmental monitoring applications.

3 Carry On Board Unit


3.1 Description
The COB unit provides the ship’s master with a display of data similar to that
of the central monitoring system. This includes docking, mooring, load
monitoring and environmental data.
The COB unit operates in a passive mode; no actions performed at the
portable unit affect operation of the main system.
The COB unit is designed to connect to the ship's AC power supply.

4 Associated Components
The following components are also supplied.

4.1 Antenna
An appropriate antenna/s will be supplied, pre-tuned to the required
frequency/s.
The antenna/s are supplied with mounting brackets for attachment to a 50mm
steel mast and which are typically mounted on the roof above the Trelleborg
equipment rack, with a direct line of sight to the handheld monitor or COB unit.

4.2 Surge Suppressor


An appropriate surge suppressor will be supplied, which is used to protect the
transmitter/s in the event of a lightning strike.

4.3 Antenna Cables


Two lengths of cables are normally supplied; 5 meters for each transmitter to
surge suppressor, and 20 meters for surge suppressor to antenna.
