UNITS OF STORAGE
OBJECTIVES
Name the units of State the capacity for Calculate storage based
computer storage each unit of storage on given scenarios
UNITS OF STORAGE
• The computer allows for data
to be stored on secondary
storage for future use. However,
there is a limit to the amount of
data that can be stored.
• Your devices would indicate to
you the capacity of storage,
e.g. 128 MB, 1 GB etc.
• See Page 20 of your text book.
HOW YOUR COMPUTER SEES
STORAGE SPACE?
• The diagram shows
how the computer
represents the amount
of available space you
may have on a
secondary storage
device.
• The space is expressed
as bytes.
• Right click on your hard
drive and select
properties to see your
full capacity.
CALCULATING STORAGE
For the calculation of storage, we will use the following measurements:
Equals to
1 bit 0 or 1
1 byte 8 bits
1 kilobyte 1024 bytes
1 megabyte 1024 kilobytes
1 gigabyte 1024 megabytes
1 terabyte 1024 gigabytes
EXAMPLE 1
Jane owns a 1 terabyte hard drive and Jackie owns a 2
gigabyte flash drive. Jackie’s flash drive has reached its
full capacity and she wants to transfer all of her data to
Jane’s hard drive. How many times can the contents of • 1 TB = 1024 GB
Jackie’s flash drive fit on Jane’s hard drive?
• 1024 GB / 2 GB = 512
• In solving the problem, we first need
to ensure that all measurements are • Therefore: 512 Times
in the same UNIT. After that has been
accomplished, the necessary
mathematical calculation can be
done.
• Practice without a calculator as it will
not be allowed in examinations.
EXAMPLE 2
Rena owns a 15 megabyte flash drive. Her classmates • ANS: 15 MB = 1024 KB x 15
each have a document of 28 kilobytes that they want
her to store. How many of her classmate’s files can be
• 15 MB = 15360 KB
accommodated on her flash drive?
• 15360 KB / 28 KB = 548.57
• Therefore: 548
• NB When there is a decimal in the answer, this
should not be recorded in the final answer. It should
not be rounded up or down, it should be decarded.
EXAMPLE 3
• 1 GB = 1024 MB
Calculate the number of times
the data of a standard floppy • 3.5 GB = 1024 MB * 3.5
disk can fit on a 3.5 gigabyte • 3.5 GB = 3584 MB
thumb drive.
• 1 Floppy = 1.44 MB
• 3584/1.44 = 2488.88 (If you can’t divide by a
decimal, you can multiple each side by 100 then
divide. [3584*100]/[1.44*100] = [358400]/[144] =
2488.88
• Therefore 2488 times
PRACTICE
A CD can store 650 megabytes
while a thumb drive can store 3.5
gigabytes. How many times can the
contents of a CD be stored on the
thumb drive?
• Did you get 5 times for
your answer?
