TEXT (The Greatest Show)

The Super Bowl, at its most basic level, is a game that determines the NFL championship (0). It has become
so much more since the first game was played in 1967.
Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial holiday in the United States. It's a day when families and friends
gather to watch the game, the most famous commercials and big-name musical acts at halftime.
The game and the two weeks of publicity, parties and other events leading up to it have turned the Super
Bowl into a spectacle (1). It can be compared with the Olympics or World Cup, a royal wedding or papal
celebration, the Oscars or Grammys.
Let me explain some reasons why the Super Bowl is so special. Firstly, the tickets are very expensive- around
$800 for this year's game, so many of the fans don't get a chance to go (2). Most are quickly acquired by
companies and corporations. Secondly, cities compete to host the Super Bowl. Many use the game as a starting
point to build a new stadium and bring in money (3). The game is rotated every year, usually to a warm-weather
city or one with a covered stadium (4). Last year's game was played in the stadium that the New York Jets and
Giants share in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It was the first outdoor game in a cold-weather city. Future games
will be in San Francisco, Houston and Minneapolis. Arizona's University of Phoenix Stadium, site of this year's
games, has a retractable roof and a field that is wheeled outside so the grass can get sunlight.
Finally, the Super Bowl is one of the most-watched events in the world. It routinely draws more than 80 million
viewers. The game has achieved100 million viewers each of the past five years. A record 111.5 million watched
Seattle against Denver a year ago. Millions more watch the game around the world. Super Bowl commercials have
become a part of the show. They attract viewers who might not watch the game if commercials were not
used (5). Over the years, the commercials have included talking animals and babies, supermodels, irreverent
humor and touching moments. The rate for this year's game is $4.5 million for a 30-second tv spot.
This year's halftime show will feature Lady Gaga (6). Other halftime Super Bowl performers have included Katie
Perry and rock guitarist Lenny Kravitz, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, The Who and Madonna.

TEXT (How schools can get children to eat their vegetables)

Researchers have discovered that a few small tricks can make a big difference.
How to get kids to eat vegetables? Marketing is the answer. You can call it tricks or just good ideas (0). Whatever
works. School lunch rooms are the testing place. Here are innovative measures that researchers have found to be
useful and they recommend schools to implement:
Fruits and vegetables should be placed up front
One school opened an all-you-can-eat salad bar at the front of the lunch line (1). The salad bar had colorful
foods to draw the students’ attention (2). The number of kids buying school lunches went up. It is also a good
idea to give kids small cups of vegetables when they are hungrier during the school day, that is, right before lunch.
Give the vegetables cool names
Marketing helps a lot. Calling vegetables names such as (3) X-Ray Carrots or Turbo Tomatoes also attracts
students’ attention.
Show the kids food preparation.
Kids like new things and a practical approach. The school principal could introduce a new dish on the menu or a
teacher could show students (4) how to cook a simple vegetarian dish.
You should collect data.
Schools are tracking what students eat (5) and what they throw away. The information is sent to the student’s
home at the end of the week. The parent can learn how to make up for either too many or too few calories in
different food groups.
Try bringing in professional chefs.
From time to time, bring to the school professional chefs and ask them to cook. Get advice from them on menus
and food preparation. They know how to make vegetables taste best (6), such as when to roast a vegetable.
Roasted veggies taste and look better than raw veggies. One chef-inspired idea is to offer nachos with low-fat
cheese.
Get kids familiar with vegetables: inside or outside the class.
Teaching kids how to read food labels (7) on products makes them aware of healthy eating. Having a cooking
program teaches new skills and raises their interest about food. There are schools which run ‘Rainbow Days’ when
kids can try different colored veggies. Finally, field trips to farms (8) are a lot of fun and helpful to break students’
resistance to eating vegetables.

Eating is the one thing we all do. It is time to make good food a main course in the schools.
