11. 1
Assertion : For a certain fixed amount of gas, the product PV is always constant.

Reason : Real gases deviate from ideal behaviour at low pressure and high
temperatures.
12. 1
Assertion : Absolute value of internal energy of a substance cannot be determined.

Reason : It is impossible to determine exact values of constituent energies of the

substances

OR

Assertion: Many endothermic reactions that are not spontaneous at room

temperature become spontaneous at high temperature.

Reason : Entropy of the system increases with increase inTemperature

13. 1
Assertion: Compounds of beryllium is largely covalent and get hydrolysed easily.

Reason: This is due to high value of ionisation potential and small size of Be.
14. 1
Assertion: 1-Butene on reaction with HBr in the presence of a peroxide produces 1-
bromobutane.

Reason: It involves the free radical mechanism.

15. 1
Assertion: The pressure of real gas is less than the pressure of the ideal gas.

Reason: The intermolecular forces of attraction in real gases are greater than that of
ideal gas.
16. 1
Assertion: All the hydrogen atoms in CH2= C = CH2 lie in one plane.

Reason: Carbon atoms are sp2 and sp hybridized.

Thermodynamics involve energy changes in chemical reactions and other
processes. Internal energy is total energy stored in a substance. We can specify
absolute value of volume but not the absolute value of internal energy. We can
measure only change in internal energy (∆U). Work done on the system is taken as
positive and work done by the system is taken as negative. Heat (q) absorbed by
the system is +ve and heat given out by system is negative. ∆U = q + w according to
first law of thermodynamics. ∆H (enthalpy change) is measured at constant
pressure, ∆U is measured at constant volume. ∆H, ∆S (entropy change), ∆G (free
energy change) and temperature help to decide spontaneity of the process.

i) ∆U in adiabatic process is

a) ∆U = q+w

b) ∆U = q-w

c) ∆U = q

d) ∆U = w

ii) If 701 J of heat is absorbed by the system and 394 J of work is done by the
system the value of ∆U is

a) -307 J

b) 307 J

c) 1095 J

d) -1095 J

iii) For N2O4(g)⇌ 2NO2(g) the relationship between ∆H and ∆U?

a) ∆H = ∆U + ∆nRT

b) ∆H = ∆U - ∆nRT

c) ∆H = ∆U + ∆2nRT

d) ∆H = ∆U + ∆3nRT

iv) second law of thermodynamics is

a) ∆H = ∆U + ∆nRT

b) ∆U = q-w

c) ∆G = H –TS

d) ∆Stotal> 0
