“Climate change impact on Animal Agriculture”
Climate change has a significant impact on animals, particularly in
animal agriculture or animal production. These climates can range from long
droughts to large floods, as well as extreme heat or cold. Agriculturists are
attempting to lessen these impacts because they are a natural phenomenon
that cannot be controlled. To minimize these effects, they conduct an audit on
every farm that suffers from a loss of animal production. Farm Inputs, Animal
Production, Farm Logistics, and Farm Logistics are the names of these audits.
Farm input is focused on feed and forage for the animals, which
provides them with energy to live and be healthy. Feeds and Forage quality
and quantity can be affected by seasonal changes in temperature like flooding
or drought and resulting to shortage of animal feed. Another farm input is
water that provides plants and animals in the farm. Feed and forage quality
and quantity can be affected by seasonal temperature changes such as
flooding or drought, resulting in a shortage of animal feed. Water is another
farm input that provides plants and animals on the farm. Energy is also
affected by climate change, such as fuel for vehicles and generators for farms
without electricity. Climate change impacts are also a critical factor in animal
production. The first example is heat stress, which can be applied to all farm
animals and varies depending on species, resulting in decreased animal
performance and reproduction. Animals are also affected by abrupt
temperature changes and require time to adjust, and climate change can lead
to the spread of diseases and pests during warmer temperatures, mild
winters, or rainfall, resulting in pest migration to different areas. Farm logistics
includes the timing and transportation of animals, feeds and supplies, animal
feeding, reproduction scheduling, animal movement through production
phases, manure management, milking equipment and schedules, and farm
maintenance. These systems are also affected by climate change. Changes
in the amount, timing, and intensity of rainfall all put farmers at risk in manure
management, such as timing of application, and any changes in temperature
will make estimating crop nutrient availability more difficult. Pasture
management is also impacted by climate change, as some grazing areas may
become unavailable due to flooding or drought conditions. Flooding can make
transporting animals or products on or off the farm more difficult due to
damaged roads or bridges. Climate affects not only farm animals but also the
people who work on the farm. The final audit is for farm exports, which are
also affected by climate change. These are the products that are marketed
and sold by the farm; some animals are sold due to a lack of forage because
of drought, but if the animals are not sold, they are forced to feed the animals,
which affects the supply chain and results in a loss of money.
Climate change has a significant impact on farm operations,
particularly in animal production, and it is essential to recognize its
vulnerabilities to mitigate its impact and implement precautions as early as
possible.
