At this age of adolescence, children's brains are developing at a rapid pace. Biological

changes in the brain's connectivity and structure combine with greater knowledge and

experience, as well as shifting social expectations, to create rapid cognitive growth. Most of

these changes take place around the time of puberty, but other talents continue to develop

throughout adolescence. Executive functions achieve adult levels of maturity during adolescence,

a period of distinctive neurocognitive development (Sanders, 2013). Adolescence is a critical

period for the refinement and stabilization of many aspects of executive function. The prefrontal

cortex portion of the brain is often related with the establishment of cognitive abilities that

permit coordination and control of thoughts and behavior. As a result of the ideas, thoughts, and

concepts formed throughout this era of life, a person's character and personality are formed

(Larson, & Asmussen, 2017).

Being an adolescent, I was so self-centered that it caused me to feel self-conscious. I

would sometimes act as if I were on a stage in front of an imaginary audience, as if I were

performing for them. One of my favorite pastimes is to dance and sing along to my favorite

songs while I'm alone in my room. I had a naive belief that I was impervious to harm, therefore I

went about my daily life as if nothing could harm me. All of this is a necessary element of the

long process of developing into a distinct individual. Unfortunately, I came to believe that no one

can understand me or know how I was feeling because of these beliefs.
