SERVING STERILE GOWN AND GLOVES

Main Objective: To assist the Surgeon or other members of the surgical team in donning sterile gown and
gloves

Rationale: Serving gown and serving gloves saves time and prevents possibility of contaminating the
sterile field and the sterile members of the health team

Pre-requisite Knowledge:

1. Principles of surgical asepsis

2. Proper Gowning and Gloving technique
Equipment:

1. Sterile towel (if included in agency protocol)

2. Sterile gown
3. Sterile Gloves

Note: Serving of gown can only be made if one is already sterile (donned own gloves and gown). Prior to
serving the gloves, make sure that you have tested its integrity.

PROCEDURE DONE NOT DONE REMARKS

When agency protocol necessitates the use of sterile

towel for drying hands:

1. Pick up one end of sterile towel and serve to the

Surgeon (make sure that the towel is not lower
than your waist but not higher than your
shoulders).

When agency protocol allows drying of hands using the

hem or lower part of the gown;

2. Pick up the gown from the sterile pack and step

back from the field.

3. a. Unfold the lower end of the gown and offer it to

the Surgeon, making sure that your right hand is
away or securely tucked beneath the middle part
of the gown.
b. Hold the entire gown, face the Surgeon and
offer the lower end of the gown.

4. While the Surgeon is drying his/her hands, locate

the sleeves of the gown. Make sure to offer the
folded sleeve (unsterile side) to the Surgeon.
Tuck your hands beneath the shoulder seams
(sterile side) of the gown so he/she can slip
his/her hands into the sleeves.

5. Once the Surgeon’s hands are inside the sleeves,

let go of the gown and let the circulator fasten the
tie in place.

Serving Gloves/Assisting in Gloving

6. Pick-up the right glove and keep your fingers

under the cuff. Pull the fingers of the gloves to
stretch it.

7. Let the thumb or the palm side of the glove face

the Surgeon, stretch the cuff outward (making a
circle).
Note: Some agency or Surgeon may request you
to announce if you are serving right glove or left
glove first.

8. Keep your thumbs out to prevent touching the

Surgeons bare hand. As he/she inserts his or her
hand into the glove, exert upward, firm pressure
and make sure that the glove doesn’t go below
the waist.

9. Let go of the glove once the Surgeon has fully

inserted his/her hand into it. Repeat the same
procedure for serving the left glove.
