WHAT’S MORE
1. Mangrove thrive in marine environment
 Mangroves protect both the saltwater and the freshwater ecosystems they
straddle. The mangroves' complex root systems filter nitrates and phosphates
that rivers and streams carry to the sea. They also keep seawater from
encroaching on inland waterways.
2. Development of root hairs in plant’s root
 The root hairs are long which allows them to penetrate between soil
particles, and prevent harmful bacterial organisms from entering the plant
through the xylem vessels. Increasing the surface area of these hairs allows
plants to be more efficient in absorbing nutrients and establish relationships
with microbes.
3. Development of microvilli in animal guts
 The microscopic microvilli effectively increase the surface area of the
cell and are useful for absorption and secretion functions. In the intestine,
they work in conjunction with villi to absorb more nutrients and more
material because they expand the surface area of the intestine.
4. Presence of guard cells in the stomata of plant
 Guard cells use osmotic pressure to open and close stomata, allowing plants
to regulate the amount of water and solutes within them. In order for plants
to produce energy and maintain cellular function, their cells undergo
the highly intricate process of photosynthesis.
