Try to solve all the questions below:

1. (Mendenhall p.289, Q:8.3-4) Calculate the margin of error in estimating a population
mean 𝜇 for these values using 𝛼 = 0.05:
a) 𝑛 = 30, 𝜎 2 = 0.2
b) 𝑛 = 30, 𝜎 2 = 0.9
c) 𝑛 = 30, 𝜎 2 = 1.5
d) What effect does a larger population variance have on the margin of error?
2. (Mendenhall p.289, Q:8.5-6) Calculate the margin of error in estimating a population
mean 𝜇 for these values using 𝛼 = 0.05:
a) 𝑛 = 50, 𝑠 2 = 4
b) 𝑛 = 500, 𝑠 2 = 4
c) 𝑛 = 5000, 𝑠 2 = 4
d) What effect does an increased sample size have on the margin of error?
3. (Mendenhall p.291, Q:8.23) In an experiment to assess the strength of the hunger drive
in rats, 30 previously trained animals were deprived of food for 24 hours. At the end of
the 24-hour period, each animal was put into a cage where food was dispensed if the
animal pressed a lever. The length of time the animal continued pressing the bar
(although receiving no food) was recorded for each animal. If the data yielded a sample
mean of 19.3 minutes with a standard deviation of 5.2 minutes, estimate the true mean
time and calculate the margin of error using 𝛼 = 0.05.
4. (Mendenhall p.299, Q:8.25 and additions)
a) Find a 90% confidence interval for a population mean 𝜇 when 𝑛 = 125, 𝑥̅ = 0.84,
𝑠 2 = 0.086
b) Find a 90% confidence interval for a population mean 𝜇 when 𝑛 = 50, 𝑥̅ = 21.9,
𝑠 2 = 3.44
c) Find the lower bound of the 95% one-side confidence interval for a population
mean 𝜇 when 𝑛 = 125, 𝑥̅ = 0.84, 𝑠 2 = 0.086
d) Find the upper bound of the 95% one-side confidence interval for a population
mean 𝜇 when 𝑛 = 50, 𝑥̅ = 21.9, 𝑠 2 = 3.44
5. (Mendenhall p.300, Q:8.38 and additions) New car models with names such as the
“Volt” and the “Leaf” are being hyped by automakers, as they scramble to produce
electric cars that are affordable for most Americans. Still in the trial stage, BMW’s Mini
E can be leased for about $600 per month, and is claimed to be able to travel between
100 and 120 miles per battery charge. Suppose that 𝑛 = 60 field trials are conducted
and that the average time between charges is 112.5 miles with a standard deviation of
4.6 miles.
a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for𝜇, the average time between battery charges
for BMW’s Mini E.
b) Construct the lower bound of the 95% one-sided confidence interval for𝜇.
6. (Mendenhall p.374, Q:10.8 and additions) In a study of the infestation of the Thenus
orientalis lobster by two types of barnacles, Octolasmis tridens and O. lowei, the

carapace lengths (in millimeters) of 10 randomly selected lobsters caught in the seas
near Singapore are measured:
78 66 65 63 60 60 58 56 52 50
a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the mean carapace length of the T. orientalis
lobsters.
b) Find the upper bound of the 95% one-side confidence interval for the mean
carapace length of the T. orientalis lobsters.
