Assignment for ethics –

Case study
A 20 YEAR OLD FEMALE COLLEGE GOING STUDENT WITH PAIN IN HER
ABDOMIN FROM LAST COUPLE OF DAYS ,WENT TO HOSPITAL TO GET HER
CHECK UP DONE ,WHILE GOING TO HOSPITAL RECEPTION SHE ENQUIRED
ABOUT DOCTOR’S AVAILIBILITY AND TIMING SO SHE COULD SEE A DOCTOR IN
EMERGANCY SHE WAS IN MUCH PAIN SO SHE ASKED FOR FAST APPOINTMENT
BUT THE PERSON WHO WAS AT RECEPTION WAS TALKING IN PHONE SO HE
COULD NOT ATTEND HER IMMEDIATELY ,IT TOOK 20 MINUTES TO WAIT AT
RECEPTION ,IN THE MEAN TIME SHE WENT TO MEDICAL DIRECTOR ASKING
ABOUT RECEPTIONIST BEHAVIOUR ,WHILE LISTENING, MEDICAL DIRECTOR
HIMSELF ACCOMPANY HER TO DOCTOR WHILE BYPASSING RECEPTIONIST AND
GOT HER TREATED WITH BEST POSSIBLE DOCTOR AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME.
NOW ACCORDING TO YOU FROM THE ABOVE CASE,

1- WRITE THREE POINTS WHICH SHOW MISCONDUCT (WRONG

BEHAVIOUR).
i. The receptionist should not use his phone while he is on duty, and if it is
an urgent private issue, he should not leave his place without making
sure there is another qualified person looking after the patients.
ii. The receptionist took much time while using phone leaving his place
(ER) uncovered, sometimes emergency cases need minutes to be saved.
iii. The medical director should not bypass the receptionist, as the first
person a scared patient rushing to the emergency room sees is not a
doctor or a Nurse; it’s an Emergency Room Receptionist. The
Emergency Room Receptionist takes charge of collecting patient
information, processing paperwork, and monitoring the waiting list. A
hurried trip to the ER starts with info collection.
2- WRITE TWO POINTS SHOWING GOOD ETHICAL
BEHAVIOUR
i. The medical director put the female patient on top of his priority. With in a
health care system, the patients’ rights are one of the most important ethical
issues. Patients’ rights are considered as the top major ethical issue.
ii. The medical director provided the female patient the appropriate Medical
Care.

1. NOTE-WRITE Underline the ethical behaviors (Wrong in RED and

Good in BLUE).
2. The right action or behaviors.
The right action or behaviors can be seen as following;
I. The healthcare assistants should recognize the social value of their
profession and protect its nobility, so that they raise themselves above the
doubts of committing any act, or holding any traits that are inappropriate
for their profession.
II. The healthcare assistants should use his/her skills, knowledge, and
expertise to improve the standards and quality of health services rendered
to the society.
III. The healthcare assistants should provide another qualified person looking
after the patient while he goes to pray, WC, do phone call, etc.
IV. The healthcare assistants should provide positive interaction with the
patient’s feelings and concerns, and to correct his/her wrong conceptions
and information about his/her illness and treatment.
V. The medical director should follow facility system by making the patient do
registration at the reception first, then, to be directed to doctor (or nurse
station according to facility system).
