The golden section rectangle is a ratio of the Divine The Divine Proportion:
Proportion. The Divine Proportion is derived from the A C B
division of a line segment into two segments such
that the ratio of the whole segment, AB, to the longer A B = A C
A C CB
part, AC, is the same as the ratio of the longer part,
AC, to the shorter part, CB. This gives a ratio of
approximately 1.61803 to 1, which can also be
expressed 1+√5 .

The golden section rectangle is unique in that when
subdivided its reciprocal is a smaller proportional rect-
angle and the area remaining after subdivision is a
square. Because of the special property of subdivid-
ing into a reciprocal rectangle and a square, the
golden section rectangle is known as the whirling
square rectangle. The proportionally de creasing
squares can produce a spiral by using a radius the
length of the sides of the square.
