The OM 904 LA/OM 924 LA (4-cyinder) and OM 906 LA /OM 926 LA (6-cylinder) engines are water-cooled four stroke die- sel infection engines. ‘The cylinders are arranged indineand have separate fueLinjection pumps (unit pumps) with a shorthigh-pressure fuel- injection line to the mult-hole nozzle !ocat- ed centrally in relation to the combustion chamber. The unit pumps are mounted di- rect on the crankcase, They re driven by the camshaft roller tappets. Each cylinder has two inlet valves and one exhaust valve The engines are equipped with an exhaust 28 turbocharger (sometimes with charge- pressure iting) and interoooler as stand- ard, Theengine can be optionally equipped With an engine brake* (throttle and con- stantiy-open throttie valves) Thanks to its fully electronic control sys- tem for controling the injection quantity ‘and injection timing via solenoid vaives, this is @ particularly low-emission engine. Ce aad General The contral system comprises an engine. resident control module, an engine control (MR) and an application-related vehicle Control unit (FR) oran adaptation module (ADM all interconnected via the Contra ler Area Network (CAN). The flame-start system is a cold-start aid for starting at low outside temperatures. It reduces the white smoke emission after the engine's started. In addition, it reduc- {5 the strain onthe starter motor and bat- teries by shortening the startup time. Fuel can be ignited by a flame glow plug in- tegrated in the charge.air pipe from the in- tercoole. The fuelis supplied to the fame {glow plugviee solenoidvate witha dosing ie. Flame-start system ‘The flame-start system is primed after a pregiow time (maximum 20 seconds) \hich is dependent on the outside temper- ture. After this time the flame-start sye- ‘tem indicator lamp goes out ‘Once the engine has started, the flame- start system is supplied with fue by the en- ine's fus delivery pump. Flame-start system indicator lamp The flame-start system is oniy operational ifthe engine is started within 30 seconds ofthe flame-start system indicator lamp going out. a ifthe fame-start system indicator lamp doesnot go out ater more than 20 sec- fonds there is @ malfunction in the flame-start system. In addition, it reduces the strain on the starter motor and battery by short- ening the startup time, ‘The white smoke limit is reduced by a run- on heating ime of upto 180 seconds after starting the engine. The engine has a fully electronic control system, which, in addition to the engine and related sensors, also comprises: © an engine control unit, and © a drive control unit and /or other vehi- cle-specific control units or ADM. Both are interconnected via a CAN (Con- troller Area Network) line which exchanges all the necessary data / information. The engine control monitors itself aswell asthe engine. A safety and emergency run- ning program is selected automatically de- pending on the malfunctions /fallures occurring (D page 39).
