MEDIUMS OF SCULPTURE:

A medium in the art world is the term for the material used to create artwork. The medium that
an artist chooses to work with contributes to both the
style of the art and its meaning. It can also enhance the
texture.

1. Clay - Clay is a versatile medium in sculpting. It

can be the medium to build a finished product,
or to make moulds for other media.
• Sculpture is a wide branch of art
encompassing many kinds of three- Bernini: Sculpting in Clay at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

• It can be the medium to build a

finished product, or to make moulds for other media.

2. Steel - Steel welded together can create large or

small sculptures. Sculptors create public art form steel as
well as artistic candle holders and tabletop displays.

Cloud Gate: Cloud Gate is a 110-ton elliptical sculpture forged of

a seamless series of stainless steel plates. The sculpture was
inspired by liquid mercury and is one of the largest stainless
steel sculptures of its kind.

3. Stone - A popular choice for sculptors for

many centuries, the stone is valued for
its natural elegance, sturdy nature, and The Statue of Liberty is an iconic structure in American culture
versatility. and history. The sculpture itself symbolizes freedom and
democracy, and in addition to its solemn significance, it was also
used as a lighthouse.

4. Wax - the preparation of finished figures in

beeswax by modelling or molding or the use of such
figures as a form for casting metal or creating preliminary
models.

at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas in September 2021
5. Glass - Artists can blow heated glass to create sculptures.
Broken shards of glass can also be fused to build sculptures,
with or without the addition of other sculpture media.
• Steel welded together can create large or small
Fireworks of Glass Tower and Ceiling, also known as
sculptures. Fireworks of Glass, is a blown glass sculpture installation in
the permanent collection of The Children's Museum of
Indianapolis located in United States of America.

6. Ice - Ice sculpture is a form of sculpture that

uses ice as the raw material. Sculptures from ice can be
abstract or realistic and can be functional or purely
decorative.
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival in northeast
China is the world’s biggest winter festival, attracting up to 7. Wood - Artists carve wood into
20 million visitors every year. sculptures. Some artists carve exclusively with a
chain saw to create elaborate wooden sculptures
while others use more precise tools to carve and
shape the wood. Wood also often serves as a
base for other sculpted material.

tools to build sculptures of all sizes. Aside from that, Chocolate sculptures are temporary
pieces of art that can serve as centerpieces for special events. Food sculptor Jim Victor
also used butter, pepperoni, peanut brittle, and cheese to create statues.

surrounding ground.
ELEMENTS OF SCULPTURE:

1. Line - Line is the path of a moving point. In sculpture, the

most important kind of line is contour line, or the outline
that forms the edges of the sculpture to create its
silhouette.

Characteristics of contour lines include:

a. width – thick, thin, tapering, or uneven

b. length – long, short, continuous, or interrupted

c. Direction- horizontal, vertical, diagonal, perpendicular, “David Annseley’s Big Ring

(1965)”

parallel, radial

d. Focus- sharp, blurry, fuzzy, choppy

e. Feeling- sharp, jagged, graceful, smooth, curved, zigzag

2. FORM & SPACE - refers to the area between, around, above, below, or
within elements in a work of art. A form is three-dimensional – it has
height, width, and thickness.

Two types of sculptural space:

a. Positive space - part of the work that is filled with subject matter

b. Negative space - the empty space around and/or above, below, or

within the sculpture.

Ex: “Umberto Boccioni, Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (1931)”

3. Scale - refers to its size relative to the size of its surrounding environment.
4. Proportion - refers to how big each part of the sculpture is
relative to the other parts.

5. BALANCE & ORIENTATION - the sculpture must have actual physical stability. . Certain
sculptural forms have natural balance (e.g. four-legged animals, bottom-heavy forms), while
others (single-legged, or long and thin, form) must be secured to a base or suspended from
supports.

Three types of Sculpture Balance:

(a) symmetric balance, - can be

divided evenly in half by one axis
balance

(b) asymmetric balance- two sides of

the sculpture are different spherical
arrangement

(c) radial balance- in which the sculpture is in a spherical arrangment

6. Texture - is the way something feels when you touch it. In art, there are two kinds of texture:

a. real texture - actual

surface quality of the
work of art, or how the
actual sculpture would
feel like if you touched
it.
b. implied texture - the illusion of texture that an artist creates to simulate the texture of
objects in real life

7. Color & Value - the lightness or darkness of a colour. Artists create the different values of a
colour by mixing its shades and tints.

8. Pattern - is the repetition of elements within a piece of art (forms or colors, for example)
Types of Sculpture

I. Relief

• Protrudes out of a flat surface, and its projection into three-dimensional space is relatively
shallow
• The back of the relief sculpture is not meant to be seen; the design can be understood from a
frontal view

A. High Relief – the figures in the sculpture are dramatically raised from the background. They
are sometimes nearly sculpted in the round.

B. Bas Relief (Low relief) – Characterized by figures that are only slightly raised from the surface
of the background

C. Sunken Relief (Intaglio Relief) – It is created by having an image carved down below the
surface of the sculpture

II. Carving

• The process of creating sculpture by cutting, chipping away from or otherwise removing
material from a solid mass using chisel or other carving tool.
• It is known as a subtractive process for creating sculpture. Common materials for this type of
sculpture are wood and stone.

III. Free Standing / Full Round

• Sculpture that exists in three-dimensional space.

• It cannot be appreciated from a single viewpoint but must be circled and explored

IV. Modeling

• A process in which the artist uses a soft, pliable material such as wax, clay or plaster that is
gradually built up and shaped until the desired form is attained.
• It is an additive method, as the artist is continually adding material to the form
V. Casting

• The process of filling a mold with a liquid material or applying a pliable material to form and
allowing it to harden.

VI. Installation / Site Specific

• Sculptural artwork that transforms an entire space into a work of art

• Constructed using materials found on the site or reliant on its location.

VII. Assemblage

• Assembling found object in unique ways to create a sculpture

• A found object is anything used in a work of art that is recognizable as an object that existed
before the sculpture.

VIII. Construction

• Additive processes where existing materials are attached in some fashion to create a sculpture
• This method of production can be used to describe the use of a number of different materials
and process including but not limited to weaving, welding, woodworking, blacksmithing or
assemblage.

IX. Non-Objective / Abstract

• Art that is simplified from something in reality

• It has no subject matter, it us based on the art elements and principles only.

X. Representational

• Art that has recognizable subject matter and is based on reality

XI. Kinetic Sculpture

• It contains moving parts and can be set in motion by air currents or a motor
XII. Post Modern

• It is a body of art movements that sought to contradict some aspects of modernism or some
aspects that emerged or developed in its aftermath.

DONATELLO (1386-1466)

EARLY LIFE:

• Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi

• Was born in Florence, Italy, sometime in 1386.
• His friends and family gave him the nickname
“Donatello.”
• He was the son of Niccolo di Betto Bardi, a member
of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild. This gave
young Donatello status as the son of a craftsman and
placed him on a path of working in the trades.
• Donatello was educated at the home of the Martelli's,
a wealthy and influential Florentine family of bankers
(Photo: Rischgitz/Getty Images) and art patrons closely tied to the Medici family.

ART STYLE:

• Sculptor Donatello apprenticed early with well-known sculptors and quickly learned
the Gothic style.
• Before he was 20, he was receiving commissions for his work. Over his career, he
developed a style of lifelike, highly emotional sculptures.

FAMOUS WORKS:

1. Saint John the Evangelist - typically depicted

as a young man, Donatello decided to portray
the apostle as an aging prophet, holding the
Bible, which was a departure from legend
toward a more humanizing rendition.

2. Bust of Niccolo da Uzzano - Niccolo
da Uzzano was an important figure in
Florentine politics in the early
decades of the 15th century, who
acted as a respected intermediary
figure between the city's powerful
rival families.

3. Cantoria - In the early 1430s, Donatello's

friend and peer, Brunelleschi, was
finalizing his ambitious design for the
